Ferdinand von Sydow

Ferdinand Karl August von Sydow (born October 2, 1795 in Opole , † June 22, 1864 in Breslau ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

For the painting The Warrior and His Child , a picture by his friend Theodor Hildebrandt , Ferdinand von Sydow sat as a model in Düsseldorf in 1832.

Ferdinand was a son of the Prussian major Karl von Sydow (1749-1837) and his wife Friederike, née von Podewils (1769-1843), a daughter of General von Podewils .

Military career

Sydow visited the Berlin cadet house and was employed on January 28, 1813 as portepeefähnrich in the Silesian Cuirassier Regiment of the Prussian Army . In mid-July 1813 he was promoted to second lieutenant and took part in the battles near Großgörschen and Bautzen during the wars of liberation . In the battle near Haynau , Sydow was seriously injured by a shot in the body and was awarded the Iron Cross II class and the Order of St. George V class.

After the war he was promoted to prime lieutenant until June 1818 and joined the 5th Uhlan Regiment on January 20, 1822 . There he became a captain and squadron chief on March 22, 1823 . On March 30, 1840, he was promoted to major and on March 22, 1843, he was transferred as a regular staff officer to the 6th Uhlan Regiment . In 1845 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class. On March 9, 1848 he was commissioned to lead the 1st Cuirassier Regiment and on May 7, 1848, Sydow was appointed regiment commander. In this position he was promoted mid-November 1849 Lieutenant Colonel in 1851 and the middle of April to the Colonel . Under awarding of the character as a major general Sydow received his on March 10, 1853 farewell with board . On March 30, 1858, he was put up for disposal with a pension . He died on June 22, 1864 in Breslau.

Sydow married on September 18, 1829 in Mitau Johanna Groschke (1810–1872), sister-in-law of Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow and a daughter of the court doctor Johann Gottlieb von Groschke . The couple had several children:
