Friedrich Wilhelm von Podewils

Friedrich Wilhelm von Podewils (* 1723 in Schnatow ; † September 11, 1784 in Bad Landeck ) was a Prussian officer , most recently major general and chief of the 9 Cuirassier Regiment .

Life

Friedrich Wilhelm came from the well-known noble family of those von Podewils from Western Pomerania . He was the son of the Prussian colonel and commander of the Friedrichsburg citadel , Peter Ernst von Podewils (* 1690; † November 28, 1755) and his wife Margarete Marie, née von Manteuffel .

In line with family tradition, Podewils took up a military career. In 1738 he became an Estandartenjunker with the regiment "Gens d'armes" No. 10 . After becoming a cornet in the Garde du Corps on May 4, 1744 , he was promoted to lieutenant on August 2, 1744. During the campaign of 1744/45 he took part in the battles of Hohenfriedberg and Thrush . On September 22nd, 1755 Podewils became captain and squadron chief of the hussar regiment "Wartenberg" No. 3 .

During the Seven Years' War 1756/63 he took part in the battles of Prague , Kolin and Kunersdorf , was wounded and received the order Pour le Mérite . On March 2, 1757 he was appointed major . On February 17, 1759 he joined the "von Schorlemer" No. 6 dragoon regiment . On April 9, 1760 he became a lieutenant colonel . On June 13, 1762 he became commander of the "von Meyer" No. 6 dragoon regiment , and on September 1, 1764 he was appointed colonel . On June 11, 1769 he became chief of the cuirassier regiment "von Bredow" No. 9. On September 7, 1769 he was promoted to major general. He took part in the campaign of 1778/79 .

He and his wife owned the Klein-Reichow, which he sold on January 21, 1782 to his son-in-law Karl Ernst August von der Groeben .

Podewils was married to Eleonore Antonie Josepha Karoline von Woisky († before March 5, 1788), widowed von Spiller. The marriage produced only daughters.
