Karl Ernst August von der Groeben (born February 6, 1750 in Zamzow , Saatzig district , † January 27, 1809 in Ostrowo) was a Prussian major general .

Life

His parents were the Rittmeister in the hussar regiment "von Kleist" Joachim Heinrich von der Groeben (* July 9, 1705; † July 25, 1768) and his wife Luise Henriette Sophie, née Freiin von Hünicke (* February 20, 1718; † 25. January 1772).

Military career

Groeben came on March 1, 1764 as a flag junior in the "Alt-Württemberg" dragoon regiment of the Prussian army . There he rose on June 1, 1766 to ensign and on June 12, 1769 to secondary lieutenant . On April 9, 1778 Groeben became adjutant general of the regiment chief Karl Erdmann von Reitzenstein . He then took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession and was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on July 7, 1779 . From April 27, 1785 he was staff captain , on May 28, 1789 major and on December 16, squadron chief . In 1794 he fought during the campaign in Poland in the Battle of Rawka and the Battle of Warsaw . For this, Groeben received the order Pour le Mérite on June 8, 1794 .

On February 6, 1797 he was appointed commander of the "von Bieberstein-Pilchowsky" dragoon regiment. In this capacity he rose on July 11, 1798 to lieutenant colonel and on May 20, 1800 with a patent from July 8, 1800 to colonel . Groeben received his resignation as major general on April 8, 1806 with an annual pension of 600 thalers. After the lost war , the state could no longer pay pensions. On February 9, 1808, Groeben was informed that the transfer of the pension could not be made while the enemy was in the country. He died on January 27, 1809 in Ostrowo.

Groeben married Dorothea Auguste Sophie von Podewils (* 1761; † September 6, 1785) on June 5, 1781 , divorced von Reitzenstein . She was the daughter of General Friedrich Wilhelm von Podewils . The couple had the following children:

After the death of his first wife, he married Friederike Luise Henriette von Platen (* 1760 - February 18, 1804) in 1787. The couple had several children including:
