Fernando R. Capalla (born November 1, 1934 in Leon , Iloilo Province , Philippines ) is a Filipino clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Davao .

Life

Fernando Capalla received on 18 March in 1961 by Bishop Juan Nicolasora Nilmar the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Jaro .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on April 2, 1975 titular bishop of Grumentum and auxiliary bishop in Davao . The Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Bruno Torpigliani , donated him his episcopal ordination on June 18 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Jaime Lachica Sin , Archbishop of Manila , and Artemio G. Casas , Archbishop of Jaro.

On April 25, 1977, he was appointed Prelate of Iligan . On February 18, 1978 he renounced his titular bishop's seat in the course of the new allocation guidelines of the Roman Curia. Pope John Paul II elevated the territorial prelature to a diocese on November 15, 1982 , making him the first bishop of Iligan. On June 28, 1994, he was named coadjutor archbishop of Davao. With Antonio Lloren Mabutas' retirement on November 6, 1996, he succeeded him in the office of Archbishop of Davao.

On February 12, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.
