The Flinders Highway is a trunk road in the Australian state of Queensland . It leads from the Bruce Highway in Townsville on the Pacific coast west to the Barkly Highway at Cloncurry .

The highway was formerly called National Route 78 (N78), but was renamed to A6 as part of the Australian road name change .

course

Most of the highway runs through the Australian outback and passes numerous small towns. Agriculture is the predominant industry .

Townsville and the Bruce Highway (NA1) leave the Flinders Highway to the south. After approx. 70 km he turns to the southwest, crosses the Burdekin River and reaches Charters Towers , where he crosses the Gregory Developmental Road (A7 / S63). Then he continues his way to the west-southwest and crosses the Campaspe River and the Cape River shortly before the small town of Pentland . His path continues to the west. Shortly before Hughenden , where the Kennedy Developmental Road (S62) crosses, it reaches the south bank of the Flinders River , after which it is named.

Via Richmond , the road follows the river to just before Julia Creek . Wills Developmental Road (S83) crosses in Julia Creek . After the Flinders Highway has crossed the Gilliat River , the Fullarton River and the Williams River , it meets 14 km east of Cloncurry on the Landsborough Highway (NA2) coming from the southeast and together with it forms the Barkly Highway (NA2), which continues to follow West to Cloncurry, Mount Isa and across the border into the Northern Territory .

The highest point on the highway is at 560 m, the lowest at 7 m.
