Florian Kolfhaus (* 1974 in Straubing ) is a German Roman Catholic priest , diplomat and author .

Life

Kolfhaus grew up in Straubing and attended grammar school there. As a teenager he was an altar boy and group leader as well as a member of the board of the Stadtjugendring Straubing. He volunteered for many years in the St. Wolfgang nursing home for mentally handicapped children. Kolfhaus successfully participated in national and international tournaments in shorthand until he graduated from high school . The construction of the Fatima chapel on Steinberg near Thiersheim goes back to his initiative in 2003. It was inaugurated on October 1, 2005 and is now a popular pilgrimage destination in the surrounding parishes.

Kolfhaus is a long-time member of the Catholic Scouting Association of Europe (KPE), in which he was a group leader. On October 25, 1998, he was awarded one of the KPE's highest honors, the Woodbadge for the Boy Scout level . On 15 September 2000 he was awarded by the St. Pölten diocesan Bishop Kurt Krenn the priesthood . At that time he was a member of the Order of the Servants of Jesus and Mary , which he left immediately afterwards to move to the Diocese of Regensburg .

On July 19, 2011, Kolfhaus was appointed chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignore ). He is an associate member of the International Marian Pontifical Academy (PAMI) based in Rome . From 2004 to 2006 Kolfhaus went through the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy . This was followed by activities in the nunciature in Bogotà ( Colombia ) and at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg . Kolfhaus was at the Pontifical University Gregoriana in 2006 in the trade dogma with an examination of key texts of Vatican II PhD . His dissertation entitled Pastoral Doctrinal Proclamation. Basic motif of the Second Vatican Council. Research on "Unitatis Redintegratio", "Dignitatis Humanae" and "Nostra Aetate" was supervised by the Jesuit Karl Josef Becker as doctoral supervisor. He also obtained a licentiate in canon law .

From 2009 Kolfhaus worked in the Second Section of the State Secretariat of the Vatican, where he was responsible, among other things, for contact with international authorities such as the OSCE , NATO and WHO . A particular focus of his work was the issue of discrimination against Christians in Europe. As a pastor he was in charge of the Capitolina , a Catholic student union . At least since September 2017 he has been a Nuntiaturrat the Apostolic Nunciature in Prague operates.

Theological positions

In his dissertation , Kolfhaus examines various interpretive approaches to the texts of the Second Vatican Council , in particular with regard to the three decrees on ecumenism ( Unitatis Redintegratio ) , religious freedom ( Dignitatis Humanae ) and the relationship of the church to other religions ( Nostra Aetate ). In the course of his analysis of the texts, Kolfhaus developed the theory that the council exercised its teaching authority in the mode of a munus praedicandi , which - at least in the three decrees examined - deliberately dispensed with definitive teaching decisions and instead intended instructions for the practice of church life. This new style of munus praedicandi appears in the claim of the authentic teaching authority of an ecumenical council, so it cannot simply be devalued with the catchphrase “pastoral council”. Nevertheless, the new type of formulation is different from the classic mode of conciliar texts, which the author calls munus determinandi . "The lack of a theological term that perfects the systematic presentation of the various forms of exercise of the Magisterium often provokes superficial assessments of the council or errors in ideological positions that the council absolutely or completely reject in its doctrinal statements," said Kolfhaus. Such misunderstandings of “liberal or traditionalist narrowing” must absolutely be overcome in the reception of the Council texts.

On the question of the end of life of Mary , the mother of Jesus, Kolfhaus advocates the thesis that she completed her earthly life without suffering death and was taken up alive into heaven. With this position he is in opposition to the majority opinion in Mariology , which assumes a death of Mary. Liturgically, Mary's death is firmly anchored in the tradition of the Church under the title " Dormition of Mary " ( dormition ), especially in the Orthodox Church . The Church Magisterium, however, left this question open in the dogmatic formulation of the bodily acceptance of Mary into heaven . Kolfhaus has summarized the arguments for his position in the book Stronger than Death: Why Maria Did Not Die .
