The Sabetta Airport ( Russian Международный аэропорт Сабетта Meschdunarodny aeroport Sabetta ) is a Russian airport near the settlement Sabetta . It is owned by the project company Yamal LNG , which is majority owned by the Russian gas company Nowatek and is building a gas liquefaction plant near the settlement, and is operated by a wholly-owned subsidiary. In addition to the port of Sabetta , the airport is the most important traffic object in the settlement, in order to fly in and out of the workers who work in shifts.

history

Antonov An-124 transport aircraft at Sabetta Airport

The construction of the airport only took about 3 years. At the end of February 2013 the Nowatek company bought the airport construction site. The first aircraft landed in Sabetta on December 4, 2014 as part of a test flight . It was a Boeing 737-500 with the registration VQ-BAC of the Russian airline UTair . Following this test, the airport received approval from the Russian aviation agency . The first charter flight for passengers was carried out by a Yamal Airlines aircraft on February 2, 2015 . The Boeing 737 carried a total of 138 people from Novy Urengoy to the settlement. The first passenger plane from abroad landed at the airport on March 9, 2016 . She brought 4 passengers from Beijing and flew on to Moscow . On January 22, 2017 , the largest aircraft to date, an Antonov An-124 operated by Volga-Dnepr Airlines, landed at the airport. The transport machine brought components for the gas liquefaction plant with a total weight of almost 67.7 t from China to Sabetta.

Terminal building

The only terminal building has two floors with an integrated four-story tower. It is 36 m wide and 78.5 m long and has 5500 m². The terminal building has no passenger boarding bridges , so that passengers have to climb the aircraft directly over the tarmac via stairs. The terminal can handle 200 passengers per hour for national and 50 for international flights. An airport fire brigade and a small hangar are in the immediate vicinity of the terminal building. There are areas for aircraft de-icing .

Helipad

Until the first aircraft landed at the airport, it was only possible to get to the airport quickly by helicopter . The use of airplanes has cut the cost of moving workers by one fifth. However, the airport still has an illuminated landing area for helicopters. It is 40 m × 42 m in size. Above all, air freight can also be received on it in the form of external loads .

safety

The airport is with a simple instrument landing system of category I provided that landings allowed for greater visibility. A satellite-based supplementary system , rotary radio beacons and distance measuring equipment are available. The runway has PAPI lights . The particularly harsh climatic conditions have an impact on air traffic. In addition to the sometimes extremely low temperatures of below −50 ° C, the strong wind is characteristic of the airport. The direct proximity to the sea and the barren, flat landscape favor the wind. Due to the extreme north-facing position, there is polar night around two months of the year . Fog and snowstorms also impair visibility. Since October 24, 2016 , all safety-relevant technology has been installed in order to be able to use the runway in two directions. Previously it was only possible to land from the southwest.

So far, there are no known major incidents at Sabetta Airport. The only accident to date occurred on February 16, 2014 : A Mil Mi-8T helicopter took off from the airfield and was turned by a strong wind, so that its tail rotor hit a mobile steam system. No people were harmed in the accident. In 2015, Yamal Airlines pilots reported irregularities in air traffic control at the airport. Especially the uncoordinated flight movements of the helicopters were reprimanded by the aircraft pilots.
