The port of Sabetta ( Russian Порт Сабетта ) is a Russian infrastructure project on the Siberian Yamal Peninsula in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug . From here, natural gas is cooled down to liquefied natural gas (LNG) in a newly built facility and transported to Europe and Asia using liquefied gas tankers . The project should be completed in 2019 [obsolete] .
After construction began in 2013, the first tanker was loaded with liquid gas in December 2017. In addition to Nowatek (50.1%), Total , CNPC (20% each) and the Chinese Silk Road Fund (9.9%) are also involved in the project. The total investment is estimated at US $ 27 billion.
The port with a size of 138 hectares is to be expanded to a capacity of 17.85 million tons per year. The Yamal Peninsula has large, previously untapped natural gas fields . In particular, the South Tambeiskoje field, which has been known since 1974, is to be exploited; the planned and legally guaranteed funding period extends until 2045.
The project was made possible because global warming cleared the Northeast Passage north of Russia and south of the Arctic for a few months or even all year round, depending on the location. In December 2017, a gas tanker, the Eduard Toll , reached the port of Sabetta for the first time without an icebreaker in winter; he came from South Korea and then went to France.
