The Shanghai Pudong International Airport ( Chinese  上海 浦东 国际 机场 , Pinyin Shànghǎi Pǔdōng Guójì Jīchǎng ) is one of the two international airports in the Chinese city of Shanghai with Shanghai-Hongqiao . The company, based in the Pudong district, is listed in the SSE 50 share index. In 2016, the number of passengers increased to 66 million, making Shanghai Pudong the third largest airport in China (after Beijing and Hong Kong ) and 9th in a global comparison of airports . It is a hub for China Eastern Airlines .

history

The airport was opened on the 50th anniversary of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1999. A terminal designed by the Paris airport company ADP under the direction of Paul Andreu and a runway were inaugurated at that time. On March 17, 2005, a second runway was put into operation. The third runway was then built and opened in March 2008. The fourth slope (16L and 34R) was opened in March 2015.

General

The airport extends over an area of 40 km² and is about 30 kilometers from the city center and 40 kilometers from the older Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. The airport currently has four runways, each 3400 meters, 3800 meters and 4000 meters long and 60 meters wide. It offers 76 parking spaces for aircraft and 50,000 m² of storage space. Around 50 airlines fly to more than 130 domestic and international destinations. There are various bus routes, metro , taxis and maglev train to get to the city center .

Airlines and Destinations

In 2012 there are numerous direct connections from German-speaking countries: Lufthansa flies daily from Frankfurt am Main Airport (since September 26, 2013 with an A380 , meanwhile in the 2018 winter flight schedule with a B747-8 ) and Munich Airport with an A340-600 (from 2020 with A380), as well as Swiss from Zurich Airport with an A340-300 and Austrian Airlines from Vienna Airport with a Boeing 777 . Even China Eastern flies daily from Frankfurt with a B777-300ER , Air China from Frankfurt and Munich with an A350-900 .

Airport train station

Transrapid Shanghai-Pudong

The world's only commercially used maglev train runs between the airport and the Pudong district . The Transrapid Shanghai connects the airport train station with the Longyang Street metro station in just under seven and a half minutes and ends around 8 km in front of the Lujiazui financial and trade zone and right next to the Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC). The maximum speed is 431 km / h and the route has a length of about 30 kilometers. While the track was built by a Chinese company, the train itself comes from the German Transrapid consortium . He has two class areas. The route is operated by the Shanghai Maglev Train Corporation .

future

Terminal 1

The capacity was initially 40 million passengers a year. In March 2008 a second terminal with a very similar architecture was inaugurated and the capacity increased to 60 million passengers per year. In the long term, the airport is to house one of the four future logistics centers, be able to welcome 80 million passengers a year and have four terminals. A fifth runway east of the existing facility is under construction.
