action

The financial entrepreneur Manuel Esquema flies with his companion Javier Cesti from Miami to New York City, where he is supposed to support a politician involved in illegal business for a fee in his difficulties with the judiciary. Esquema worked many years ago under his real name Alan Riply in Miami as a temporary worker. At that time he had an affair with Ella Brice, the wife of the politician. Her husband found out about this and hired his assistant Rick Martino to kill Riply. Although he survived undetected, he suffered severe facial injuries and paralysis of the right arm. With the support of his friend Cesti, he recovered from the attack and built his financial empire. Without being recognized, he now moves in Brice's private environment, where he also meets his wife again. This initially behaves repellent to him. Only when he reveals himself to her does her love flare up again. Ripley / Esquema asks Brice to let him have his wife. When he refuses, they both flee and hide in a lonely hut. There they are tracked down by Brice. There is a showdown. Brice seriously injures Ripley / Esquema, but is overwhelmed herself in the end. Ripley / Esquema is taken away in the ambulance accompanied by Ella. On the threshold of death, he recalls the story of his fateful love for Ella. It remains to be seen whether he will survive.

Reviews

Charles Taylor wrote on salon.com that the film was one of the best American films of the year. Its director is the most " smooth " ( " fluid ") and " open-emotional " directing that ever existed. The camera work, the film music and the “ sensuality ” of the play of the main actors would reinforce this emotionality.

John Bailey was nominated for the Golden Frog of the Polish International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography ( Camerimage ) in 1999.
