Forever My Girl is an American love story directed by Bethany Ashton Wolf from 2018. The film is based on the book of the same name by Heidi McLaughlin .

action

On the day of their wedding, Josie is left standing at the altar by her fiancé Liam Page. Eight years later, Liam is a world-famous country singer and guitarist. He broke with his Saint Augustine, Louisiana . After a concert in New Orleans , he is woken up by a groupie who accidentally tramples on his old cell phone. In a panic, besieged by fans, he runs to a cell phone shop, where he has it repaired. On it is the last message from Josie, which he has been listening to every day since then. When his best childhood friend dies in a car accident, he breaks off his tour and sneaks to the funeral, where his father Brian, with whom he has not spoken for eight years, gives the eulogy.

The city doesn't talk to him well and Josie hits him in the stomach the first time they meet. Nevertheless, he comes first with his father. It turns out that not only did he ditch his fiancée, but he also has a daughter named Billy, named after his late mother. Liam falls from the clouds, postpones his further plans and puts off his agent. He is now trying to become a part of his daughter's life, who has also inherited her father's musical talent. And so slowly the old love in Josie begins to flare up again. When Billy decides to call him Daddy, Josie gives him a second chance. The romantic date turns out to be a publicity stunt at the same time, because he introduces Josie to the press as "the one".

Just as happiness seems perfect, a momentous incident occurs. Billy chokes at a barbecue. After Liam didn't notice it at first, Billy is saved by Josie's brother, while Liam, frozen in shock, did nothing. The incident reminded him of the death of his mother when he was eight years old and could only stand by and watch. He gets drunk in a bar, where Josie's brother shows up and suggests that he's not doing Josie or Billy any good. After talking to his father, he leaves Josie a second time.

The pathetic songs that he then writes are a great success, but he still feels a void in himself. Finally, his tour manager persuades him to return to Josie. The tour is canceled and Liam leaves Josie a message in which he tries to explain his behavior. He also promises never to leave Saint Augustine without her and Billy. She forgives him.

A short time later, the two married. Billy and Josie accompany him on his tour through Europe. He and Billy are singing a duet there.

background

The film is based on the book of the same name by Heidi McLaughlin. Shortly after publication, Mickey Liddell's production company , LD Entertainment , acquired the rights to the book. They found director Bethany Ashton Wolf for the script and direction. Some changes have been made compared to the template. This is how Liam Page went from a rock star to a country star. Even before the actual production began, Wolf, who was very impressed by the template, hired the songwriters Jackson Odell and Brett Boyett to write the songs for the film.

Alex Roe was chosen as the main actor . As a Briton and as a musically naughty actor, he didn't actually fit into the role of a southern country singer, but he convinced the filmmakers when he auditioned and also when he imitated the typical southern dialect. He also sang all of the songs in the film himself.

The crew only had a day and a half for the three concert scenes in the film, which were shot with more than a hundred extras.

The film premiered on January 16, 2018. In the United States, it was shown in theaters on January 19, 2018. In German-speaking countries, it had its cinema release on August 16, 2018.

reception

Reviews

Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times praised the film primarily because it was one of the few exceptions among romance films in which a woman was the director. The canvas couple Alex Roe and Jessica Rothe would harmonize well. However, she also complained that the film would not show anything revolutionary new. It is simply an uncomplicated romantic tale.

Joe Lydon gave the film a rather negative review for Variety magazine . He compared the film to " Nicholas Sparks Lite" and described it as "cheesy". Above all, he was disturbed by the wrong focus that the film had and referred to the lack of or insufficiently executed explanations for Liam's strange escape behavior. Good scenes, especially those that function as “comic relief”, are unfortunately rather rare.

Markus Fiedler drew the following conclusion on Filmstarts.de : “With 'Forever My Girl' the audience gets exactly what posters and trailers promise - a gentle mixture of feeling, love and drama on the verge of kitsch. Child actress Abby Ryder Fortson, meanwhile, almost single-handedly ensures the memorable moments in the shallow story. "

On Filmdienst.de the film received only one of five stars and was downright panned: “Incredible, stressful melodrama that overuses the set pieces of the genre and is full of wrong moments that neither touch nor make you thoughtful. The only plus point of the film is the convincingly embodied child role. "

success

Despite rather mixed reviews, the film became a huge success. It grossed around $ 16.4 million at the box office on a budget of $ 3.5 million, including $ 4 million on the opening weekend alone.
