Foscor ( Catalan for darkness) is a Spanish progressive metal , blackgaze and post-rock band from Barcelona that was formed in 1997.

history

The band was founded in 1997 as a studio project by the guitarist Falke and the bassist and singer Fiar. In 1999 their own studio called Noctiflorous Productions was set up and the first songs were recorded. In 2000, Norax joined as a singer. The following year, a first demo with three songs was made to send it to various labels. In 2003, a split was published with Xerión . Foscors part consists of the already known song material of the demo and a cover version of a Xerión song. In the same year the group signed a recording contract with the French label Sacral Productions , after which work on the debut album began. In 2004 the singer Norax left the line-up, the guitarist Guillem aka Wilhkiem and the drummer Pedro aka Nechrist were newcomers in the same year. This enabled the group to make their first appearances. In the same year, the debut album Entrance to the Shadow's Village was released . In 2005 and 2006 various gigs were held in Spain and France, with the band performing together with groups such as Kampfar , Necros Christos , Machetazo , Frostmoon Eclipse , Proclamation , Destinity , Berserk , Otargos and Ered . In 2006, cover versions of two Katatonia songs were recorded for the tribute album December Songs , which was released on the German label Northern Silence Productions . In the same year the demo ... Narrow Is the Path to Darkness ... was also released, which contains four songs. With this, the group advertised a new label after Sacral Productions had discontinued its services. In 2007 , Entrance to the Shadow's Village was re-released with bonus songs through Oaken Shield , a sub-label of Adipocere Records . In the same year the group signed a recording deal with Temple of Darkness Records to release an album, which was the first with a full line-up. The phonogram was released in September of that year under the name The Smile of the Sad Ones . To promote the album, the band held gigs, including in Portugal , playing with groups such as Forgotten Tomb , Swallow the Sun , Decayed , Corpus Christii and Handful of Hate , among others . In 2008 the song Toteninsel was recorded as a tribute to the artist Arnold Böcklin . In the same year work began on the next album and performances were held in France and Spain along with bands such as Shining , Farsot , Nehëmah , Blodsrit and Balrog . In 2010, the split release Onslaught of Black Putrefaction with Necrosadist , which had been planned since 2008, was published on Necroterror Records. In 2011 the band contributed a song to the tribute album Önd - A Tribute to Enslaved . The following year appeared DVD Deu anys vers la Foscor at Dark Woods , the live recordings from the years 2001 to 2011 includes. In 2014, Those Horrors Wither was the next studio album. The next album Les irreals visions was released in 2017 via Season of Mist . In the following year an album followed with Les irreals versions , which contains songs from the previous album in alternative versions. The next album followed in 2019 with Els sepulcres blancs . Els sepulcres blancs is the second part of a trilogy that begins with Les irreals visions . As a guest musician, SG from Secrets of the Moon is represented on the album.

style

Moritz Grütz from Metal1.info stated that the band initially played black metal , but has now devoted itself to post-rock. In an interview with him, Fiar stated that the title Els sepulcres blancs refers to that of the Catalan playwright Jaume Brossa . The texts are in Catalan. Andreas Schiffmann from Rock Hard wrote in his review of Those Horrors Wither that the band tried too hard to create innovative songwriting , "that some great ideas get lost between rather clear references to Opeth's middle phase and memories of Codes Nouveau Gloaming ". As a result, the album "sounds more eccentric than it could be. What stands out, however, are the melodies and vocals in the style of Depressive Ages Jan Lubitzki . In a later issue, Schiffmann reviewed Les unreals visions and found that the band is now completely away from Black Metal It now remains his darkness and thirst for adventure that make up the progressive part of the scene. In terms of sound and ideal, the group is comparable to Virus or Dødheimsgard , but Foscor's songwriting is more sensitive. He also compared the singing again with that of Depressive Age. Meredith While listening to Les unreals versions , Schmiedeskamp noticed that the metal component had moved into the background and had instead been replaced by electronic elements . In addition, the piano was more in the foreground, and moments that would be reminiscent of early Opeth were given by ambient passages Overall, the album sounds as if Klimt had 1 918 dispensed with electric guitars and instead added a trip-hop influence , making the music seem melancholic , interesting and calm. About Els sepulcres blancs , Schiffmann wrote that the album is about "coping with the maddening changes of the modern age", with the stylistic continuation of the previous album. The sound of the group can be recognized by "Falke's unmistakable guitar playing and front man Fiar's weightless voice". In addition, aural parallels to Alcest can be heard. One issue later, Schiffmann wrote that the band packaged "musically lighter fare than content". The album combines "cultural history and spiritual philosophy" with "introverted rock with fading guitars". In an interview with him, Fiar ruled out Foscor's return to Black Metal. Katrin Riedl from Metal Hammer also stated in her review of Les irreals visions that the band is moving further and further away from its Black Metal roots. Instead, the music is "spherical", "progressively tingling", but "hardly complex". Occasionally growls or a bandoneon are used, but overall the songs are not very memorable in the long run.
