Francis Xavier DiLorenzo (born April 15, 1942 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † August 17, 2017 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Richmond , Virginia, USA.

Life

Francis DiLorenzo entered the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia and studied philosophy and theology. He was ordained a priest on May 18, 1968 by the Archbishop of Philadelphia , Cardinal John Joseph Krol . He was pastor in Warrington and chaplain at the local Archbishop Woods High School for Girls and later teacher of biology and religion at Cardinal Dougherty High School in Philadelphia. From 1971 to 1973 he studied moral theology at the Pontifical Academy Alphonsian in Rome and in 1975 at the Roman Angelicum to Dr. theol. PhD. In 1983 he became vice- rector of the St. Charles Borromeo seminary in Philadelphia, later its rector.

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Scranton and titular bishop of Tigias on January 26, 1988 . The Bishop of Scranton, James Clifford Timlin , ordained him episcopally on March 8 of that year ; Co- consecrators were Anthony Joseph Cardinal Bevilacqua , Archbishop of Philadelphia, and Joseph Carroll McCormick , Ex-Bishop of Scranton.

On October 12, 1993, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Honolulu . He was named Bishop of Honolulu on November 29, 1994. He was named Bishop of Richmond by John Paul II on March 31, 2004, and was installed in office on May 24 of the same year.

DiLorenzo was involved in various commissions in the Bishops' Conference of the United States ; he was chairman of the Committee on Science and the Importance of Human Values.
