Frank H. Asbeck (born August 11, 1959 in Hagen ) is a German entrepreneur and CEO of SolarWorld AG and Solarparc AG. He held a 28% stake in SolarWorld AG until mid-2013. In addition there are u. a. Shares in the private bank Hauck & Aufhäuser .

Life

Asbeck comes from an old industrial family. His father comes from Westphalia and his mother from Alsace . Asbeck went to school in Dortmund and passed the Abitur there. He then went to study at the University of Bonn and graduated there in 1982 to study agricultural science as a graduate engineer from.

In December 1979, along with Petra Kelly , Gert Bastian , Michael Vesper and others, he was one of the founding members of one of the first green regional associations in Hersel near Bonn. In the following years he was active for some time as the youngest member of the parliamentary group in the district council of the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis , before he retired from active politics in 1987. He is still a member of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party .

In 1988 Asbeck opened an engineering office for the dismantling of industrial plants and the construction of combined heat and power plants , which his brother Marc also joined. These activities were soon expanded to include trading in photovoltaic modules and inverters and with kits and systems for generating solar energy. At times he also ran a company with his brother Marc that rented out special protection vehicles. In 1993, Asbeck Immobilien GmbH (1998: Asbeck Immobilien- und Kraftwerksgesellschaft mbH, 2000: WindWelt GmbH) was founded, which was converted into Solarparc Aktiengesellschaft in 2005.

At the end of 2008 he acquired the Calmuth estate near Remagen and thus the premises of the former International Film Union GmbH in order to be able to devote himself to his hunting hobby there . At the end of 2012, he bought Marienfels Castle from entertainer Thomas Gottschalk for over 5 million euros , also to expand his hunting ground .

In June 2009, Asbeck was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his social commitment and his commitment to climate protection. The award was made by the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Jürgen Rüttgers .

In 2009 Asbeck published his book Eine Solare Welt , in which he explains how photovoltaics has developed and why, in his opinion , it will play a key role in the energy supply of the future.

The self-confessed dyslexic lives with his wife in the Villa Cahn in the Bonn district of Bad Godesberg . As a protagonist of the solar industry and due to his openly displayed, enjoyable lifestyle, Asbeck was often referred to ambiguously in the press as the “ Sun King ” until Solarworld's second bankruptcy . Frank Asbeck is socially committed in a variety of ways. Since 2006 he has been the curator of the Rheinviertel community foundation .

Solarworld

Asbeck founded the company Solarworld in 1998 and went public in 1999 . In the years that followed, Solarworld became one of the world's largest manufacturers of photovoltaic modules, also through acquisitions of other companies.

In November 2008 Asbeck caused a stir with the plan to buy Adam Opel GmbH out of the parent company General Motors and to integrate it into his company Solarworld.

In 2013, due to an existential crisis in the company, it was decided to reorganize, in which its stake would drop to around one percent. SolarWorld has been partnering with Qatar Solar Technologies since 2010 ; Asbeck is a member of the supervisory board there.

On May 10, 2017, Solarworld announced bankruptcy for the first time . In the same year, the Bafin checked the legality of a controversial sale of shares by Asbeck. After a change in the shareholder structure, the company initially continued operations, but finally had to file for bankruptcy in March 2018.
