Career

Thommessen came to Bayer Uerdingen in 1977 as a youth player via the stations VfR Fischeln and Borussia Mönchengladbach . He played four seasons for Bayer 05 in the Bundesliga . He made his debut under coach Karl-Heinz Feldkamp against Borussia Mönchengladbach on the 33rd match day of the 1985/86 season , on April 22, 1986, in a 2-1 away win on the Bökelberg. Before goalkeeper Manfred Kubik , he formed the defense of the blue-reds together with Branko Rodosek , Karl-Heinz Wöhrlin and Norbert Brinkmann . There were seven regular players missing from Uerdingen on this match day: Werner Vollack , Matthias Herget , Michael Dämgen , Werner Buttgereit , Friedhelm Funkel , Wolfgang Funkel and Rudi Bommer . In the following season 1986/87 he came in reaching the 8th rank on 19 league appearances and scored two goals. He also ran in the four games in the UEFA Cup against Carl Zeiss Jena (3: 0, 4: 0) and Widzew Lodz (0: 0, 2: 0), as well as in the DFB Cup on October 25, 1986 with one 3-2 home win against 1. FC Nürnberg.

At the end of the 1988/89 season Thommesen left Uerdingen after just one more Bundesliga assignment under coach Rolf Schafstall on March 18, 1989, with a 2-0 away win at Eintracht Frankfurt, and went to Rot-Weiss Essen in the 2nd Bundesliga . In the team from Bergeborbeck , he was part of the regular line- up under coach Hans-Werner Moors alongside teammates such as Mario Basler , Fabrizio Hayer , Dirk Helmig , Willi Landgraf , Dirk Pusch and Jürgen Röber , and was in his first year with the Red-Whites 6th rank. After the 1990/91 season, the mismanagement of the RWE Presidium with a debt of 5 million marks led the Red-Whites to relegation by withdrawing their license and for Thommessen his career in professional football ended.
