Frank Windsor

Frank Windsor (* 12. July 1927 in Walsall , Staffordshire , England as Frank W. Higgins ) is a British actor .

Life

Windsor began his career in 1957 with a supporting role in the British television film A Man for All Seasons . In 1962 he got the role of Detective Sergeant John Watt in the police series Z Cars , through which he became known among British television audiences. After 128 episodes, he was promoted to Detective Inspector in the series and then switched to the spin-off Softly, Softly in 1966 (a certain parallel to Fritz Weppers Harry Klein , who moved from Commissioner to Derrick and was promoted from Chief Detective Officer to Inspector).

By 1969 he was seen in 84 episodes of this series. In the meantime promoted to Detective Chief Inspector, he moved in 1969 as Detective Superintendent to another spin-off from Z Cars , Task Force Police . By 1976 he worked in 123 episodes of this series, most recently as Detective Chief Superintendent. Windsor became so popular as John Watt that he first investigated the " Jack the Ripper " case on British television in 1973 in an independent miniseries . Then he researched various historical crimes in another miniseries in 1976, such as the Lindbergh kidnapping , the Reichstag fire and the murder of Lizzie Borden . He played John Watt one last time in a guest appearance on Z Cars .

Also in the 1980s and 1990s he was seen regularly on British television, including in the series Doctor Who and Inspector Barnaby . Most recently, he had a recurring guest role in the hospital series Casualty between 2003 and 2004 . He is most likely to be known to German-speaking audiences for his portrayal of Colin Campbell on the ZDF - adventure four-parter Die Abenteuer des David Balfour from 1978 with Ekkehardt Belle in the title role.

In addition to his great success as a television actor, Windsor also had occasional feature film appearances. He played supporting roles in John Schlesinger's drama Sunday, Bloody Sunday with Peter Finch , in the comedy Die Schlemmerorgie with George Segal , Jacqueline Bisset , Robert Morley and Philippe Noiret and in the adventure film Revolution with Al Pacino and Donald Sutherland .
