Franklin P. Mall, about 1911

Franklin Paine Mall (born September 28, 1862 in Belle Plaine , Iowa , † November 17, 1917 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American embryologist , physiologist and anatomist .

Mall's father came from Söllingen near Durlach , and his mother was also of German descent. Franklin Mall studied medicine at the University of Michigan and went to Germany after graduating in 1883, initially to receive training in ophthalmology in Heidelberg , then to work in Leipzig with Wilhelm His and Carl Ludwig (with whom he had a special friendship) . In 1886 Mall returned to the United States and became an assistant to William Henry Welch at Johns Hopkins University .

In 1889 Mall received a professorship in anatomy at Clark University , and in 1892 a corresponding position at the University of Chicago . In 1893 he returned to Johns Hopkins University as professor of anatomy, where he spent the remainder of his academic career.

Important early work of Mall dealt with the embryology of the thymus and its entodermal origin, the vascular supply and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract and the reticular connective tissue . Together with the surgeon William Stewart Halsted , he carried out pioneering experiments on intestinal peristalsis and the optimal suturing technique for anastomoses of the intestine. Mall's later work on the peritoneal spaces , the development of the eyes and the polarity of nerve cells can be considered fundamental. Further work dealt with the development of the diaphragm , the intestinal loops and the abdominal wall as well as the biometric recording of the growth in size of an embryo and with malformations (especially cyclopia ) and their causes. Mall et al were also able to make important contributions to the blood flow to the spleen and to the structure of the liver (with the portal field as a structural unit), the vascular system and the heart .

In 1901 Mall was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1906 to the American Philosophical Society, and in 1907 to the National Academy of Sciences . In 1908 he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

Mall published in German and English. His students and collaborators included Charles Russell Bardeen , George W. Corner , Ross G. Harrison , Warren Harmon Lewis , Florence R. Sabin , George Linius Streeter, and Herbert M. Evans . Mall had been married to Mabel Glover since 1894 and the couple had two children.
