František Tondra

František Tondra (born June 4, 1936 in Spišské Vlachy , Czechoslovak Republic , † May 3, 2012 in Košice ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Spiš (Spiš) in eastern Slovakia .

Life

Tondra studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Bratislava . He was ordained a priest on July 1, 1962. After several years of pastoral work , he received his doctorate in 1978. From 1983 to 1989 he taught as a professor of moral theology at the Comenius University in Bratislava .

On July 26th, 1989 he was appointed Bishop of Spiš by Pope John Paul II . He received his episcopal ordination from the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Cardinal Jozef Tomko , in Spišské Podhradie on September 9, 1989. Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio , Francesco Colasuonno , and the Archbishop of Tyrnau , Ján Sokol .

In 1990 he was elected deputy chairman and in 1991, succeeding Cardinal František Tomášek, chairman of the Bishops' Conference of Czechoslovakia. After Slovakia became politically independent, it also received its own Slovak bishops' conference , which Bishop Tondra elected to chair on May 4, 1993. For health reasons he resigned this office in April 1994, but was re-elected chairman of the Slovak Bishops' Conference in August 2000 and confirmed in 2003 and 2006 respectively. He was a consultor to the Congregation for Catholic Education .

On August 4, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. František Tondra's motion to resign from the office of Bishop of Spiš for reasons of age.
