Franz Adam was the third son of Emanuel Philibert von Waldstein-Wartenberg and his wife Maria Anna Theresia von Liechtenstein . He was married to Carolina Ferdinandi (1777-1844). As a soldier he took part in the war against the Turks and in Russia. He devoted himself to botany from 1789 and traveled with Paul Kitaibel (1757-1817) through Hungary. His herbarium is archived in Prague.
Together with Kitaibel he is the main author of Francisci comitis Waldstein… et Pauli Kitaibel… Descriptiones et icones plantarum rariorum Hungariae (MA Schmidt, Vienna, three editions 1802–1812; folio (465 × 332 mm)).
His widow Carolina had the Gräflich Waldstein crypt chapel built in the cemetery of the parish church of St. Michael in Oberleutensdorf in 1823. The monument for Franz Adam von Waldstein created for 1000 guilders is the work of the Dresden sculptor Franz Pettrich .
Franz Adam von Waldstein-Wartenberg was the brother of Joseph Karl Emanuel, Johann Friedrich and Ferdinand Ernst von Waldstein and Wartenberg .
plant
The book is important for the flora of Central Europe and is magnificently furnished; the panels, 16 of them in double format, are colored by hand. The Descriptiones et Icones are extremely rare; they belong to the rarities of botanical literature; This is particularly true of the last volume published in the Napoleonic War Confusion.
Honors
In 1804 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . Since 1814 he was an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
The genus Waldsteinia Willd. from the rose family (Rosaceae) has been named after him. The naming of the Waldstein bellflower ( Campanula waldsteiniana ) was also in his honor.
