Franz Georg Maier (ancient historian)

Franz Georg Maier (born October 25, 1926 in Stuttgart ; † November 23, 2014 in Küsnacht ZH ) was a German ancient historian .

Franz Georg Maier studied history , archeology , classical philology and German at the universities of Tübingen , Zurich and Rome from 1945 to 1952 . In 1951 he received his doctorate in Tübingen on the subject of Augustine and ancient Rome. Investigation of Augustine's analysis of Roman history, ideas about Rome and political religiosity . From 1952 until his habilitation in 1957, he received a scholarship from the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the German Archaeological Institute . Research stays in Italy, Greece and Cyprus also take place during this period. In 1957 Maier became a private lecturer at the University of Tübingen. From there he was appointed to a full professorship at the University of Frankfurt in 1963 . Three years later he switched to a professorship at the newly founded University of Konstanz , where he was also Vice-Rector in 1967/68. In 1972 he became professor of ancient history in Zurich, where he stayed until his retirement in 1994. In 1992/1993 Maier was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton .

Maier's archaeological activity began in 1952 when he took part in the British Kouklia expedition to Cyprus, in which he participated until 1955. In 1966 he became head of the Paphos research project , which included archaeological and historical studies. From 1977 to 1978 he was President of the Commission for the Swiss Archaeological School in Greece. Maier was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute and Honorary Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London . Maier has been on the Advisory Board of the Gerda Henkel Foundation since its inception and has been a member of the Foundation's Board of Trustees since 1995, of which he has been an honorary member since 2005.

Maier dealt with the history of the entire ancient world and the ancient oriental empires . Maier was also a specialist in the archeology of Cyprus. He wrote a volume of Fischer Weltgeschichte and published another. He was also editor of the excavations in Old Paphos on Cyprus series of the DAI.
