Franz Hubmann (born October 2, 1914 in Ebreichsdorf , Lower Austria ; † June 9, 2007 in Vienna ) was an Austrian photographer and photojournalist . Franz Hubmann lived and worked as a freelance photographer and author in Vienna.

biography

Hubmann initially embarked on a career as a textile technician, from 1836–38 he ran a hat factory. Only after the Second World War did he decide to turn his hobby into a profession. As a 32-year-old family man, Hubmann began a three-year apprenticeship in 1946 at the Graphic Education and Research Institute in Vienna.

In 1951, when he was the head of the picture office for Austrian Tourism Advertising, he met Karl Pawek , who was the editor of Austria International magazine at the time , and a long-term collaboration began. In 1954 they founded magnum - the magazine for modern life . The aim of the magazine was to gently guide people into the new world of modernity. Hubmann's photo series, for example about Café Hawelka , were his breakthrough as a photographer and photo journalist. He was the chief photographer until the magazine was discontinued in 1964.

Over the decades he has published around 80 illustrated books , in particular on contemporary, historical and folklore topics. In addition, he produced 17 television films for ORF in the 1960s and early 1970s , including the 5-part series The High School of Photography .

His grave is in the Hietzinger Friedhof (group 68, row 6, no. 5).

Artist portraits, picture essays and human photo journalism are the focus of his predominantly black and white oeuvre . Profound reports and live pictures are his specialty - Hubmann has the perfect feel for the crucial moment.

Hubmann is a representative of the so-called life photography. The human being is the focus of his interest. His pictures convey a sense of life and draw the viewer into the action. They seem spontaneous and show the everyday things, the little things in life. In this way, they become important evidence of Austrian cultural history.
