Franz Knies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Knies (* 20th century ) was a German opera and gospel singer with a tenor voice .

Life

Franz Knies grew up with a sister in a strongly Christian - Free Church family in Wilhelmshaven . During his school days, his singing talent was noticeable, as the young Franzel liked to sing questions and answers as well as his homework, so that his teacher called him "Nightingale the Sexta". Despite reservations about a stage career on the part of believing parents, he began his singing studies in Munich after nine months at the Hamburg Conservatory .

During World War II , Franz Knies fell into the hands of Russian troops in 1944 after a gunshot wound to his left arm. In the subsequent interrogation, his statements about his occupation were initially not believed, as there was the general assumption that Propaganda Minister Goebbels' promise that German artists would not be drafted into the Wehrmacht would also be practiced. For this reason, Franz Knies was asked to prove his claims. In the following he was considered an "artist" among the prisoners and was treated very generously. After the Russians learned that the singer's arm had to be amputated, he was transferred from Minsk to Smolensk and from there to Faljonki , where his wound was treated comparatively intensively and ultimately successfully. In August 1945, Knies returned to Germany with the camp's first transport home from Siberia. Here he began again a concert activity through different zones of occupation of post-war Germany - partly paid with food.

A decisive turn took his singing career after falling out of a crusade evening of the Canadian preacher Peter Wittenberg for personal conversion decided he wanted henceforth use his musical skills exclusively for sacred music. So he subsequently appeared as a gospel singer in church services, spiritual recitals and evangelism. He worked with speakers and musicians such as Wim Malgo , Peter van Woerden , Kurt E. Koch , and Anton Schulte . The collaboration with the latter ultimately resulted in a radio presence of his sound recordings on a Christian program that was broadcast by the Monte Carlo station in Monaco and from which the gospel radio eventually developed. He also published records with gospel songs for Christian publishers such as Hermann Schulte or the midnight call .
