Franz Krutter (born August 5, 1807 in Solothurn , † November 15, 1873 ibid) was a Swiss writer , lawyer and politician .

Life

Franz Krutter was born as the son of the businessman, grand councilor and cantonal judge Franz Urban Balthasar Krutter and Theresia, née Tschann. He lost his father in 1815. Krutter was then under the guardianship of his uncle, the councilor Georg Krutter , but was raised by his mother, who encouraged him to keep a diary when he was ten. At least some of the diaries are preserved in Krutter's estate, which is in the Solothurn Central Library .

After attending schools in Solothurn, Krutter studied law in Munich and Heidelberg . This was followed by trips to Dresden , Prague and Vienna . Since a seven-month stay in Paris did not bring about the hoped-for improvement in his French language skills, Krutter went on to study in Geneva . He justified this in a letter to his confidante Joseph Anton Dollmayr with the words: “You can see that I am in Geneva. Why did I leave Paris? To learn French. (…) The French hustle and bustle there is so absurd for the stranger that he soon fully embraces his compatriots. ”In 1830 Krutter returned to Solothurn and initially worked in the office of the appellate court . He sympathized with the ideas of the liberal movement of 1830, which also heralded the regeneration period in the canton of Solothurn and led to a new, democratic constitution at the end of the year, but did not yet feel any inclination towards active politics. He wrote to Dollmayr: “I was completely indifferent to our revolution; I don't mean just doing nothing, I couldn't even feel for it. Parties quarreled that were alien to me. ” From 1832, Krutter had been an appellate clerk, later a judge in various functions. In 1833 he married Susanna Glutz von Blotzheim, who died in 1838 giving birth to her second son, who followed her two days later. In 1840 he got married to Susanna's sister Catharina Amanzia Victoria and bought a house on the Hermesbühl in Solothurn, next to the property of his in-laws. From 1839 to 1841 Franz Krutter was a Grand Councilor in Solothurn. Although he voted with the Liberal Party on constitutional issues, he also condemned the radical crackdown by the Liberal government against the opposition when, on January 6, 1841, they arrested the conservative leaders of the entire canton and theirs on charges of a planned armed coup Seal the press. During the time in the Sonderbund , Krutter, who always advocated balance and tolerance, held back with political statements and devoted himself more to literature. From 1856 Krutter was a councilor for the city of Solothurn and from 1866 until his death a cantonal councilor of liberal-conservative sentiments.

Literary work

Krutter's work is determined by historical dramas, but his first publications were poems under the pseudonym Valentin Namenlos . Although the "dramatic fairy tale in three acts" Salomon and Salomeh (1840) was quite successful and Krutter subsequently published other dramas (with Niklaus von Wengi and Samuel Henzi they dedicated themselves to historical figures of particular interest to Krutter's home region, the cantons of Solothurn and Bern ), many works remain unprinted to this day, including Emperor Tiberius , Julian and Francesco , Duke Ake , Die Rebellen and Gelimer . A tragedy about Agnes Bernauer was published from the estate by the Solothurn pottery company on the occasion of Krutter's 100th birthday .

Another unprinted play, which is available as a copy in the form of a duplicated typescript in individual libraries ( Swiss Theater Collection in Bern , Solothurn Central Library ), stands out due to its unusual subject matter: The gas bride , written in collaboration with Alfred Hartmann , Georg Schlatter and Rudolf Oskar Ziegler on the occasion of the opening of gas lighting in Solothurn in 1860.

Krutter also published various short-lived literary magazines, including with Alfred Hartmann Alpina: Swiss Yearbook for Beautiful Literature. He was also one of the founders of the Solothurn Pottery Society and held lectures on topics from literature and history.

Franz Krutter's estate is in the Solothurn Central Library.
