Franz Muheim (diplomat)

Franz Emmanuel Muheim (born  September 27, 1931 in Bern ) is a former Swiss ambassador . From 1996 to 2001 he was President of the Swiss Red Cross .

Life

Franz Muheim graduated from grammar school in his hometown of Bern and from 1952 to 1956 studied humanities at the universities of Freiburg , Geneva and Paris . After various internships, he joined the diplomatic service in the Federal Political Department (EPD), today's Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), and worked in Belgrade , Rabat and London until 1971 . He then headed the EPD's Council of Europe service for two years and the United Nations and International Organizations section from 1973 to 1978 .

From 1978 to 1981 he was the first employee of the Swiss Ambassador to the United States . Until 1984 he was Deputy Director of the Political Directorate of the FDFA and Head of Political Division I for Europe and North America , and then until 1989 Head of the Directorate for International Organizations. From 1989 to 1994 he was ambassador to London .

Franz Muheim was a Fellow at Harvard University from 1981 to 1982 and Professor at the Bologna Center of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies from 1995 to 1996 , an educational and research institution for international relations and diplomacy at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore . In 1996 he took over the office of President of the Swiss Red Cross (SRK) from Karl Kennel . In this position he was followed in 2001 by the lawyer and politician René Rhinow .
