Stegmann's specialty were architectural pieces, which he executed with fine painting and rich detail. Both vedute and interior views, especially of places of worship, have been preserved, which show a late romantic conception of art. One of the architectural depictions that has been highlighted by contemporary critics is a depiction of the rotunda from the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna .
