Frida - with the heart in hand (also: Frida and love ; original title: Frida - med hjetzt i hånden ) is a Norwegian youth film by the director Berit Nesheim from 1991. The comedy is based on the book of the same name by Torun Lian .

action

13-year-old Frida lives with her older sister Kaisa with their divorced mother Bente in Oslo. The pubescent girl orients herself in her awakening love life entirely to Erich Fromm's book Die Kunst des Liebens , from which she frequently quotes. She is often with the neighbor boy and classmate Kristian, who supports her again and again and helps out of a tight spot, for which she pays him with sweets. Frida, however, raves about three other boys: holiday acquaintance and soccer player Raymond, with whom she maintains a pen pals, piano virtuoso and handsome Andreas, whom she longs for, and schoolmate Martin, with whom she has her first affectionate experiences.

When her father wants to remarry, she falls out with him and decides to find a new man for her mother via a personal ad. By chance she meets Karl, a poet and university professor of religious studies, whom she convinces to help her with this project. Karl helps Frida write the reply letters and accompanies her while she remotely assesses the men who have responded to the complaint. The two develop a relationship of trust with one another.

But then everything goes wrong: When Frida notices Andreas' strange relationship with the piano teacher Ellinor Svendsen, she turns away from him. Raymond surprisingly visits Frida while she is preparing for an evening celebration; then she breaks up with him too. But Kristian reveals this visit to Martin. At the birthday party of her classmate Camilla that evening, she uses the situation to approach Martin, whereupon Frida kisses Kristian and quickly leaves the party.

She also got into trouble at school and her teacher Skar announces a house call to speak to Frida's mother. But Frida secretly invited a man who had answered the complaint for the same time and prepared everything for it. This leads to confusion. When Frida realizes that nothing is going as planned, she runs away from home and flees to Karl.

Only now does Karl notice that Frida is the daughter of his secret love, Brenda, and can put the mother-daughter relationship back on track. Frida is disappointed with the theory of Fromm's book and tears it up. Shortly afterwards, Frida's father comes to visit. She regrets that he came alone and that his new relationship has apparently broken up again, which again casts doubt on her love. But the conversation with her father finally brings her soul life back into balance. At the end of the film, Frida meets Martin.

criticism

“With her cinema debut, Berit Nesheim made a wonderful screwball comedy for adolescents. "Frida and Love" is a humorous, clever film and with Maria Kvalheim in the title role it has a fascinating leading actress. "

- from the Nordic Film Days program

Frida - Heart in Hand is an entertaining youth film from Norway, which knows how to please with a realistic story about love and family as well as fresh, convincing performances by the actors. (...) The director's instinct and empathy are just as evident as humor and irony. The film is reminiscent of the best screwball comedies when Bente and her admirer sit across from each other in the living room and the possibilities of verbal misunderstandings are taken to extremes. (...) The story captivates with its authenticity that is free of clichés and those problems that can arise in the family and in matters of love are broached with sufficient depth. "

- Jean Lüdeke

"The sensitive and humorous literary film adaptation from Norway based on Torun Lian's famous youth book about the difficulties of growing up impresses not only with its funny and authentic story, but above all with its disarmingly charming leading actress!"
