The Nordic Film Days Lübeck (abbreviation: NFL) were organized by the Lübeck Film Club for the first time in 1956 and are one of the most traditional film festivals in the world. They are the only festival in Germany and, along with the later Festival du cinéma nordique in Rouen, France, the only one in Europe that specializes entirely in the presentation of films from the north and northeast of the continent.

The film days have been held annually on six days over the first weekend in November since 1956. They have been city-sponsored since 1971 and are organized by the Hanseatic City of Lübeck together with the film institutes of the Nordic and Baltic countries . The ambassadors of the Nordic countries in Germany are the patrons. The artistic direction was Hauke ​​Lange-Fuchs until 2000 . Subsequently, Linde Fröhlich took over the artistic direction from the end of 2000. She has been at your side as another festival director of the Nordic Film Days Lübeck since 2017, festival manager Florian Vollmers. The honorary president of the festival is the Norwegian actress and director Liv Ullmann . Media partners are the Norddeutsche Rundfunk (NDR) and the Lübecker Nachrichten (LN).

Every year the latest fiction, documentary and short films from Scandinavia , the Baltic States , Finland and Iceland are presented in Lübeck . There is also an extensive children's and youth program, since 2016 a section for series and a retrospective dedicated to important epochs, certain genres or important personalities in film history. In the film forum new productions related to Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg can be seen. Since 2016, 360 ° films have been shown in a mobile fulldome cinema. This is accompanied by seminars, discussions, roundtables, panels, exhibitions and concerts.

With around 36,000 visitors most recently (2019), the Nordic Film Days Lübeck are a large public festival and an important meeting point for the film industry from Germany as well as Northern and Northeastern Europe. Many of the directors who presented their debut works in Lübeck have meanwhile achieved world fame - such as Bille August , Lasse Hallström , Aki Kaurismäki or Fridrik Thór Fridriksson .

The NFL is currently awarding nine film prizes: the NDR feature film prize endowed with € 12,500 , the Lübecker Nachrichten audience prize (€ 5,000), the Baltic film prize (€ 2,500) for a Nordic feature film, the Interfilm church film prize (€ 5,000), the Documentary Film Prize of the DGB District North (€ 5,000), the Prize of the Children's Jury (€ 5,000), the Children's and Youth Film Prize of the Nordic Film Institutes (€ 5,000) and the CineStar Prize (€ 5,000) for a short film made in Northern Germany; In 2018, the Freundeskreis award for the best feature film debut (€ 7,500) was added. The prizes with a total value of 52,500 euros will be awarded at a film award gala on the penultimate evening of the film days.

In 2018, anniversary events took place throughout the year on the occasion of the 60th Nordic Film Days Lübeck, which were held from October 30th to November 4th of that year.

Festival 2006

The festival, which was extended to five days, recorded a record attendance of 20,500 visitors. On the occasion of its 100th anniversary, Nordisk Film A / S was honored with a retrospective. For the first time, five NFL prizes and the MSH Schleswig-Holstein Film Prize, endowed with 55,000 euros, were awarded in four categories during the “Film Prize Night” jointly organized by the NFL and the Schleswig-Holstein Film Funding MSH.

Festival 2007

The 49th festival took place from October 31 to November 4, 2007. The Filmforum Schleswig-Holstein, the section of the film days for productions from Germany's northernmost federal state, celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Festival 2008

The 50th Nordic Film Days took place from October 29th to November 2nd, 2008 and opened with the Danish feature film Der Tanz by Pernille Fischer Christensen .

Festival 2009

The 51st Nordic Film Days took place from November 4th to 8th, 2009 and opened with the Norwegian feature film The Orange Girl . The film by Eva Dahr is based on the novel of the same name by Jostein Gaarder .

Festival 2010

The 52nd Nordic Film Days took place from November 3rd to 7th, 2010 and opened with the Swedish feature film Sound of Noise , a crime comedy by Ola Simonsson and Johannes Stjärne Nilsson . Stellan Skarsgård , among others, was welcomed as star guests .

Festival 2011

The 53rd Nordic Film Days took place from November 2 to 6, 2011 and opened with the Norwegian film Happy, Happy , a tragic comedy by Anne Sewitsky . After five years, the North German Film Prize was discontinued and the festival concentrates on the Scandinavian and Baltic core program.

Festival 2012

The 54th Nordic Film Days took place from October 31 to November 4, 2012. The Filmforum, section for North German film, celebrated its 25th anniversary. The subject of the retrospective was Scandinavian horror films.

Festival 2013

The 55th Nordic Film Days Lübeck took place from October 30 to November 3, 2013. "North! Wards in the film: Spitzbergen and the way to the pole" was the theme of the retrospective; The festival opened with Benedikt Erlingsson's Icelandic film Of People and Horses .

Festival 2014

The 56th Nordic Film Days Lübeck (October 29 - November 2, 2014) achieved a new visitor record with almost 30,000 visitors. They were opened with 1001 grams by Norwegian star director Bent Hamer .

Festival 2015

The 57th edition of the Nordic Film Days Lübeck took place from November 4th to 8th, 2015. The film Sture Böcke (Hrútar) by the Icelandic Grímur Hákonarson was shown at the opening . This year the retrospective is dedicated to the topic of “Nordlandreisen. Travelogues & Roadmovies ”.

Festival 2016

The 58th Nordic Film Days Lübeck (November 2nd - 6th, 2016) set a new record with over 32,000 visits. The film days opened with the Norwegian production Rosemari by Sara Johnsen. The feature film debut Herzstein by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson won the NDR film award endowed with 12,500 euros.

Festival 2017

The 59th Nordic Film Days Lübeck (November 1st - 5th, 2017) set a new record with over 33,000 visits. The film days opened with the Swedish production Träum 'weiter (Dröm vidare) by Rojda Sekersöz. The feature film debut Der Charmeur (Charmøren) by Milad Alami from Denmark won the NDR film award endowed with 12,500 euros.

Festival 2018

In the 60th anniversary year, the Nordic Film Days Lübeck presented 199 films over six days from October 30th to November 4th. Moonika Siimet's film The Little Comrade (Seltsimees laps) from Estonia was the opening film. The big winner was the Icelandic film Gegen den Strom (Kona fer í stríd) by Benedikt Erlingsson, which received four prizes: in addition to the NDR Film Prize endowed with 12,500 euros and the Lübecker Nachrichten audience award (5,000 euros), the Baltic Film Prize (2,500 euros) ) and the Church Film Prize Interfilm (5,000 euros).

Festival 2019

At the 61st edition of the Nordic Film Days from October 29 to November 3, 2019, 196 films were shown over six days. The Swedish love drama Feuer und Flamme (Eld och Lågor) by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein was shown at the opening . Another contribution from Iceland, Hlynur Pálmason's work Weisser Weisser Tag (Hvítur, Hvítur Dagur) , received the NDR Film Prize .
