Friedrich August Koehler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich August Köhler (born August 14, 1768 in Hornberg ; † February 23, 1844 in Marschalkenzimmern ) was a Protestant pastor from 1804 to 1844 in the village of Marschalkenzimmern, today a district of Dornhan in the Rottweil district . He wrote topographical and historical writings about the Kingdom of Württemberg and collected student songs and regional ghost stories . With his depictions of the south-western regions of the Kingdom of Württemberg, the " Memminger of the upper Neckar area" prepared the ground for the official descriptions of the Oberamt.

Live and act

Friedrich August Köhler was born on August 14th, 1768 in the Oberamtsstadt Hornberg as the eldest child of the deacon Friedrich Köhler and Elisabeth Margarethe Hosch. His family environment was pietistic . The uncle Pastor Wilhelm Ludwig Hosch influenced his upbringing as a private teacher. From 1786 to 1792 he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Tübingen .

Before he held the pastoral position in Marschalkenzimmern from 1804 to 1844, he supported his father in his official business until his death. Until 1801 he passed through several vicariates. From 1801 to 1803 he was tutor in the service of Baron von Seckendorf . After a vicariate in Gutenberg, he received the pastor's position in Marschalkenzimmern in 1804. At first he lived with his mother and siblings in the local rectory. In 1813 he evaded his appointment to the parish in Dornhan. After he was born Christine in 1827. Weisser from Marschalkenzimmern had married, he moved with the large family into the house he had built below the church, today Brunnenstrasse 15. The initials of the couple FCK and the year of construction 1835 are carved on the door frame. After his death he was buried at his own request "in the garden belonging to him, next to the churchyard under an apple tree".

Köhler's work springs from his interest in geography and history. He liked to deal with spectacular events such as catastrophes, wars and criminal cases. Little by little he withdrew to the field describing the place. He dedicated his old work to the official description of the country. In 1838, in a wave of appointments, he was made a corresponding member of the Association for Patriotic Studies. The statutes of the association created the obligation to carry out orders, answer inquiries and notify the statistical-topographical office of the Kingdom of Württemberg . In 1840 the association issued an invitation to keep local chronicles. Pastor Köhler then sent in extracts from the chronicles of his district.

According to the assessment of the holdings in the State Archives, a significant part of his regional studies is based on well-known printed representations and reference works, such as the Swabian Chronicle by Martin Crusius ( =>. Annales Suevici ) and its sequel Johann Jacob Moser , the Wirtembergische Geschichte von Sattler , the work About Binder's church and teaching posts in Württemberg , as well as newspapers, especially the Swabian Merkur . The references are usually cited. Regardless of this, he probably also evaluated archival sources in parish archives, community registers and private archives. He probably drew his detailed knowledge from them.
