Friedrich Ludwig Karl Knackfuß (born January 2, 1772 in Klosterlausnitz , † July 9, 1842 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

His parents were Karl Friedrich Knackfuß (1738–1782) and his wife Johanne Wilhelmine, née Longolius (1740–1781). The father was a lieutenant in the free regiment "Quintus" during the Seven Years' War and then a princely Saxon forest geometer.

Military career

After the death of his mother, Knackfuß came to the Potsdam orphanage on June 21, 1782 and on December 1, 1790, was employed as a corporal in the fusilier battalion "von Thile" of the Prussian army . He took part in the siege of Warsaw and the battles at Ostrolenka , Nowidno and Krinky in 1794/95 during the suppression of the Kościuszko uprising . At the beginning of February 1795 Knackfuß advanced to secondary lieutenant and after the campaign on February 1, 1796 he joined the 1st Warsaw Fusilier Brigade.

After participating in the Fourth Coalition War , he was rendered inactive and his reinstatement was promised on November 28, 1807. On December 12, 1809, he was employed as a prime lieutenant in the General Staff with a full salary from January 1, 1810. From August 1, 1810, Knackfuß worked as a teacher at the General War School in Berlin and rose to staff captain in mid-July 1811 . At the beginning of the wars of liberation he stayed at the office of the general staff in Berlin on the orders of the king after the military school was closed and joined the mobile army as captain of the general staff. In the battle of the Katzbach he acquired the Iron Cross 2nd class. He also took part in the battles near Leipzig and Paris .

On March 29, 1815 he became a major in the General Staff and at the beginning of October 1815 he was commanded to survey the Rhine . On January 9, 1816, he was transferred to the 2nd Department of the War Ministry . In this position, Knackfuß received the Order of St. Anna II Class on December 10, 1816 . On October 4, 1818, he was appointed conductor of the third department in the topographic office . In 1825 he was awarded the service cross and on March 30, 1827 promoted to lieutenant colonel. On May 29, 1827, his salary was set at 1900 thalers. On March 30, 1833 he was given the character of a colonel and on his 50th anniversary in service, Knackfuß received the Order of the Red Eagle III on December 1, 1850 . Class with a ribbon and a personal allowance of 300 thalers a year. Seriously ill, he asked for his departure , which Knackfuß was granted on May 14, 1842, with the status of major general with the statutory pension . He died on July 9, 1842 and was buried on July 12, 1842 in the first garrison cemetery.

Knackfuß married on June 24, 1816 in Koblenz Maria Katharina Theresia Walpurgis Settegast (1792-1829), a daughter of the doctor Modest Amand Settegast and his wife Anna Elisabeth Mazza. The couple had several children:
