Friedrich Wilhelm von Nassau-Weilburg (born October 25, 1768 in The Hague , Netherlands ; † January 9, 1816 in Weilburg Castle ) was Prince of Nassau-Weilburg from November 28, 1788 until his death and would have his closest relative without a male Heirs of the cousin Friedrich August von Nassau-Usingen who were to succeed him as Duke of the Duchy of Nassau , which was formed in 1806 as a result of joining the Rhine Confederation .

Life

Friedrich Wilhelm was born in 1768 as the son of Prince Karl Christian von Nassau-Weilburg (* 1735; † 1788). After his death he became Prince of Nassau-Weilburg .

After the occupation of nearby Mainz by the French, Prince Friedrich Wilhelm fled to Bayreuth in 1793 from Kirchheimbolanden Castle , the new residence built by his father in addition to Weilburg . This ended the palace's function as a princely residence, and with it the rule of the Princes of Nassau-Weilburg over this region. When the Duchy of Nassau was established in 1806 by the grace of Napoleon, Friedrich Wilhelm ruled together with his 30 years older cousin Friedrich August (* April 23, 1738; † March 24, 1816) from Biebrich Castle , as it was already clear at that time that Friedrich August would have no male heirs - among his seven children were only two sons who had died in childhood. It was thus foreseeable that the House of Nassau-Usingen, together with the ducal dignity, would fall to the House of Nassau-Weilburg under Friedrich Wilhelm.

This did not happen, however, because Friedrich Wilhelm died on January 9, 1816 at the age of 47 when he fell from a staircase in Weilburg Castle . Friedrich August died just a few weeks later, on March 24, 1816, so that Friedrich Wilhelm's son Wilhelm became Herzog, for whom his father had built the Erbprinzenpalais in Wiesbaden's Wilhelmstrasse from 1813 , which was no longer occupied.

Marriage and offspring

Frederick William married on July 31, 1788 a few months before his accession, Countess Louise Isabelle of Sayn-Hachenburg , Viscountess of Kirchberg , (* 1772, † 1827) in Hachenburg . They had four children together:
