Friedrich of Baden (1788)

Friedrich von Baden (born August 29, 1756 in Karlsruhe , † May 28, 1817 in Karlsruhe) was the second son of Margrave Karl Friedrich and Karoline Luise of Hesse-Darmstadt and as such titular Margrave of Baden.

Life

As is usual with the younger sons in royal houses, he embarked on a military career. In 1766 he became a colonel in the 2nd Battalion of the 2nd Orange-Nassau Regiment. When he had to join his regiment during the Patriot Uprising in 1785 , he suffered a nervous fever near Maastricht, the consequences of which affected him throughout his life and led to his being excluded from the line of succession.

In 1793 he traveled from May to September accompanied by Heinrich Medicus to the headquarters of the Dutch Hereditary Prince Wilhelm Friedrich of Orange-Nassau . In the 1793 campaign of the First Coalition War against the French Republic, Wilhelm commanded the Dutch troops, which also included a Baden contingent. After losing the Battle of Menin , he left again.

He then retired to Karlsburg in Durlach , where he stayed until 1809. During the rise in prices in 1816/17, he had significant grain purchases made from his assets for the population of the Karlsruhe region.

In 1792, Margrave Karl Friedrich gave his two younger sons, Friedrich and Ludwig , apanage rule . This also included the rule of Kutzenhausen in Lower Alsace. This rule was lost to France after the Treaty of Lunéville on February 9, 1801 between Austria and the French Republic. In 1802, the princes of Baden, Friedrich and Ludwig, received the former imperial abbeys Petershausen and Salem , which Baden fell to as part of the secularization . As Fideikommiss, these areas received a special status under constitutional law.
