Friedrich von dem Hagen

Friedrich Ferdinand von dem Hagen (born March 1, 1846 in Neuhaldensleben , † April 19, 1926 in Bremen ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and most recently the commander of the 21st division . On April 18, 1907, he changed from the name "von Hagen" to "von dem Hagen".

Life

His parents were the forester Ferdinand von Hagen (1800–1874) and his wife Clementine, née von Landwüst (1806–1896). His brother Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Hartmann (1835–1899) was a Prussian lieutenant general.

Career

In 1864 he went to the grammar school in Stralsund . He then enrolled at the University of Berlin, where he studied law from November 1, 1864 to August 7, 1865. He then went on April 1, 1865 as a one-year volunteer in the Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 . There he was promoted to NCO on October 15, 1865, Portepeefähnrich on November 11, 1865, and on February 10, 1866 to Second Lieutenant. During the German War of 1866 he fought in thrush and the battle of Königgrätz . After the war he was assigned to the Castle Guard Company from May 17th to October 1st, 1867. After his return to the regiment, he was posted to the General War Academy from October 1, 1869 to May 31, 1870 .

During the Franco-Prussian War he came to the 1st Guards Grenadier Landwehr Regiment, where he was assigned to the 1st Battalion in Görlitz . He took part in the sieges of Strasbourg and Paris as well as the skirmish on Mont Valerien . For the campaign he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on January 8, 1871 .

On October 1, 1871, he returned to the War Academy, where he remained until July 31, 1873. During this time he was transferred to the Guards Grenadier Regiment No. 3 on January 9, 1872 as Premier-Lieutenant . He was then commanded from May 1, 1874 to May 18, 1876 in the General Staff . After that, on January 11, 1877, he was transferred to the war school in Potsdam as a teacher and placed à la suite of the regiment, and on January 17, 1877 he was sent to the war school in Kassel . There he was promoted to captain on August 30, 1877. On December 3, 1881, he was transferred with a patent to August 30, 1876 as a company commander in Grenadier Regiment No. 12 . On April 1, 1902, he became the commander of the 2nd Infantry Brigade, and on October 18, 1902, he was promoted to Lieutenant General, and at the same time became the commander of the 21st Division. On August 24, 1903, he received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle and was put up for retirement on April 15, 1904 .

On January 1, 1890, Lieutenant General von Lewinski wrote in his assessment: An officer of advantageous military appearance, good disposition and thoroughly reliable character. He has fully complied with the recommendations with which he was referred here, has familiarized himself with his business and is doing well in his current position. Tactically and discreetly, he quickly won my trust. He shows a good military eye, correct judgment and understanding of tactical conditions. According to his whole personality and disposition, he promises to become a capable battalion commander and would also be suitable as the director of a war school or the commander of a non-commissioned officer school.

Hagen married Klara Friederike Wilhelmine von Zanthier (1848-1828) in Gransebieth (Grimmen district) on October 12, 1871 . The couple had several children:
