Fritz Brotzen (born June 25, 1902 in Stettin , † August 4, 1968 in Danderyd ) was a German- Swedish geologist and paleontologist . Internationally, he became known in specialist circles as an expert on foraminifera .

Career

Fritz Brotzen broke off his school education at the grammar school before he graduated and went - as a staunch Zionist - to Palestine , where he stayed for seven years. In addition to his gainful employment, he collected fossils in the Carmel Mountains and published his findings and observations, including the first scientific mention of the Misliya Cave .

After returning to Germany, he attended natural science courses at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin for three years . After a technical examination, he was admitted to regular studies, so that two years later - in 1931 - he obtained his doctorate at the University of Halle-Wittenberg with a study on the " Silurian and Devonian fish stocks in West Podolia ".

As late as 1933, immediately after the seizure of power by the Nazi Party , Fritz emigrated Brotzen to Sweden, where he lived until his death and did research. He quickly found a job at the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet in Stockholm (until 1937) and then switched to the Sveriges geologiska undersökning as a geologist . He remained associated with this authority until his retirement in 1967, the last five years as Director of the Department of Research and Applied Geology. In 1954/55 Brotzen worked on behalf of UNESCO in Israel, in the years before and again from 1963 to 1967 he was in charge of prospecting for salt deposits in southern Sweden .

Research on foraminifera

His preoccupation with the taxonomy and systematics of the foraminifera took place against the background that their fossil species had increasingly been considered as reference fossils since the 1930s , which also allowed conclusions to be drawn about the paleoclimate during their lifetime and thus for the prediction of suitable strata of the earth in the context of the search for oil deposits could be used. In his 1934 publication on the "Foraminifera from the Senon of Palestine", Brotzen had already described various fossil species scientifically for the first time, and numerous other species followed.

The species named by him include a. Alabamina dorsoplana , Bolivina dentata , Bulimina Sellini , Cristellaria dietrichii , Cristellaria picardi , Cristellaria shalemi , Dentalina rangei , Dicarinella concavata , Dorothia plummerae , Gavelinella thal Manni , Marginulina blanckenhorni , Marginulina nothi , Marginulina rangei , Miliolina alti , Rotalia elevata , Siderolina hamata , Spirillina subornata , Textularia rangei and Uvigerina striatella .

Honors

In honor of Fritz Brotzen more fossil foraminifera species were named after him, including all kinds of genre Brotzenella and Arenobulimina brotzeni , Conorbina brotzeni , Gavelinella brotzeni , brotzeni Globorotalites , brotzeni Protelphidium , Reinhold Ella brotzeni , Rosalina brotzeni , Sigmomorphina brotzeni , Stensioeina brotzeni , Thal manniella brotzeni and Valvulineria brotzeni .
