Friedrich "Fritz" von Friedl (born April 8, 1901 in Pisek , Bohemia , Austria-Hungary ; †  December 3, 1971 in Vienna , Austria ; born as Friedrich Waldemar Wilhelm Friedl, Knight von Liebentreu ) was an Austrian cameraman .

Live and act

The son of a colonel stationed in the Austro- Hungarian Province of Bohemia grew up in Prague , Teplitz-Schönau and (since June 1912) in Vienna. Fritz von Friedl was drafted in August 1918, a few weeks before the collapse of the dual monarchy. From 1920 to 1924 he worked at the Wiener Bankverein , but was dismissed from service in December 1924 as a result of the global economic crisis.

In 1925 Fritz von Friedl switched to working behind the camera and learned the basics of photography in the Willinger photo studio in Vienna, and from March 1926 also in Berlin . In the German capital, Friedl finally made contact with the film industry and worked for the next six years as an assistant to the cameramen Willy Goldberger , Giovanni Vitrotti , Akos Farkas and Franz Weihmayr . In 1932 Friedl began working as a simple cameraman and photographed the films The Legacy of Cornelius Gulden, The Rebel , SOS Iceberg , The Finances of the Grand Duke , The Eternal Dream , My Heart Calls for You, The Springer of Pontresina, Stjenka Rasin, His best friend and fools in the snow . In between, however, he was also allowed to photograph feature films as head cameraman, including three productions by Harry Piel . In this managerial position, Friedl mostly made short documentaries. At the same time, in 1936, Leni Riefenstahl signed the Austrian for several scenes in her two-part Olympic suit. During the war Friedl almost exclusively photographed propaganda commissioned works for the Wehrmacht .

In the winter of 1946/47 Friedl resumed his film work in the British sector of occupied post-war Austria, initially as a cameraman for the newsreel Welt im Film . From July 1947 Friedl worked again as a documentary cameraman. From the mid-1950s onwards, he was hired for numerous advertising and industrial films. For the feature film he was only very rarely active and mostly in a subordinate function. In 1953, for example, he made the backpro recordings for The Pearl of Tokay and in the following year the night recordings for the travel film Pepi Columbus . In 1955 he had the second camera for the feature film Um Thron und Liebe . In 1963 Friedl was given a teaching position for image technology at Vienna's Academy for Music and Performing Arts , in 1966 he worked for four weeks as a lecturer for cine film technology at the Mödling Central School.

Fritz von Friedl's children Loni von Friedl and Fritz von Friedl work as actors, as does his grandson Christoph von Friedl .
