From Afar is a song by the Finnish folk / Viking metal band Ensiferum . Together with Into Hiding it is the first single from the album of the same name From Afar and was released on August 24, 2009 by Spinefarm Records . The single is only available as a paid download from online music services such as the iTunes Store , and was never put on CD.
History of origin
The recordings for From Afar and the Amorphis cover Into Hiding took place, together with the other songs by From Afar , from April to May 2009 in the Petrax and E-Major studios in Finland. The songs were produced by Tero Kinnunen (including Nightwish ) and Janne Joutsenniemi . The latter was also the producer of Victory Songs . They were mixed by Hiili Hiilesmaa (including HIM ) in Coalhole Studios , mastered by Svante Forsbäck in Chartmakers Studio .

style
Like the entire album From Afar , the title song is no longer compositionally comparable to Ensiferum's older works. The song has a strong progressive metal influence, but also includes epic orchestral arrangements.

criticism
The song From Afar received high praise in many reviews. The author Eckart from metal.de describes the song as a typical Ensiferum “hero hymn” with “[f] lotte [n] double bass drums, melodic riffing [n] guitars, [...] powerfully hissing [m] [ Singing and] mixed choir ”. Steffen M. from metal1.info puts it even more positively :
“[…] From Afar [waits] with massive power, a majestic melody and quite undisguised bombast. The orchestral accompaniment and the choirs do the symphonic metal credit. The powerful up-tempo rhythm, the powerful guitars and powerful growls ensure that the number does not sink into pomp . I have to wonder when I last heard such an ingenious combination of dynamism and bombast. I come to the decision: never! "
