The reigning world champion Uruguay was able to assert itself as expected in Group III as second. 2-0 against the Czechoslovaks and a 7-0 against the overwhelmed Scots were enough for the group victory. Even the strong Austrians left nothing to be desired. Scotland were defeated 1-0 and Czechoslovakia 5-0. As group winners Austria was naturally also in the quarter-finals.
