The football manager - or FIFA manager series (short: FM , spelling: football manager ) was a football manager from EA Sports for the PC . The first part was Football Manager 2002 from 2001. From 2002 to 2013, a sequel to the game appeared in the autumn of each year. The last issue was Football Manager 14 . The English and Italian title of the game was FIFA Manager from 2006 (previously: Total Club Manager ). In Spain it was also called “FIFA Manager” from 2007 and in Switzerland from 2010; in France the game was sold as an LFP manager . On November 23, 2013, the discontinuation of the series was announced.

In 1997 Electronic Arts started publishing soccer manager games with the FIFA Soccer Manager . In the following three years EA published a soccer manager game series in Germany based on the Bundesliga license. These four games can be seen as the forerunners of the later Football Manager series.

Manufacturer

The games of the football manager series are published by the US software manufacturer Electronic Arts under the label EA Sports . The game was developed from 2001 to FM 06 by the German EA Sports development studio in Cologne, but from 2004 partly also in Canada. In January 2006 members of the EA Sports development team founded the Bright Future development studio , which means that from March 2006 the entire development was relocated to Germany.

According to Spieletipps.de , the graphics were taken from the Bundesliga Stars 2001 game , which made it the most beautiful football manager of its time. Due to the lack of game depth, the game is only in the midfield and so game tips gave a rating of 70%. The title received a rating of 72% from GameStar.

Versions

Football Manager 2002

On October 11, 2001, the first part of EA's new game series was published with the Football Manager 2002 . Some game developers and the Anstoss 3 concept author and project manager Gerald Köhler with his lead programmer Rolf Langenberg from software developer Ascaron , who brought out the Anstoss series, were previously recruited to develop the FM.

After you have selected a team at the beginning, as the club's manager and coach you have the opportunity to set the team's training plan, to buy or sell players on the transfer market, to expand stadiums and the club's premises, and to negotiate advertising contracts with sponsors or to give interviews after the game and determine which youth players should be included in the professional team. In addition to your professional life, you also have a private one, which is supposed to loosen up the gameplay a bit. It is possible to display the game as text mode or to watch virtual game games in 3D mode ( FIFA engine ).

The special thing about the game at the time was the licensing of numerous leagues, through which EA was allowed to use original player names, club names and club logos from these leagues. There was also the option of expanding the data with an editor and downloading data from other editors in order to take on almost unlimited challenges.

Football Manager 2003

As an alternative to the previous navigation menu, an office has been introduced through which certain menus can be accessed by clicking on individual items. This was taken over from Anstoss . In the FM 2003 the kicker was built into the game for the first time , which summarizes the most important things of the respective game day after a game and also reports on other news. In FM 2003, the graphics of FIFA Football 2002 are used . It is also possible to include your own music in the game. This should provide more variety. The default setting is 45 leagues in 23 countries (some of them with original data), but these can be expanded using the editor.

Soccer Manager 2004

The new FIFA 2004 engine is being built into the game for the first time for the 3D game. A new addition is Football Fusion, which makes it possible to manage the team in FM and then export the data to FIFA Football 2004 and control the team there directly during the game. This combines the possibilities of both games. In order to be able to use the function, you needed both games from EA. In addition to managing a club, since FM 2004 it has also been possible to take over a national team. In addition, you can hold your own training units once a month and determine in "real time" which exercises the players have to complete.

It can also happen that you are offered a mission during the game, for example to switch to another club for a short time in order to save it from relegation.

Football Manager 2005

A database with 48 playable leagues from 28 countries is included. If the provided clubs are not enough, it is possible to found your own club. This feature is known as Create a Club (CaC). For this purpose, several thousand towns and villages have been added where the association can be founded. There is also the option of inserting additional locations using the coordinates. However, it is only possible to found your own club at the beginning of a game. The private area that existed in the previous versions was removed from the FM because it was supposedly out of date and a new one had not yet been developed.

Soccer Manager 06

In the FM 06 the Create-a-Club feature can now be used every year, whereby the private assets that have been accumulated in previous years serve as start-up capital for your own club. A new strength system shows players' skills from 0 to 108 (previously 0 to 20). Furthermore, this strength system is now also calculated differently. Another feature, the Football Fusion, was removed from the game due to compatibility issues with the data transferred from the FM to FIFA Football .

For this version EA has integrated 68 leagues from 39 countries into the game. In addition, the football manager 06 has the pictures of players from many European countries - u. a. Germany, England, Spain, Italy and Belgium - available. This is a feature that in the earlier FM versions could only be used by database updates from fan communities. New player pictures were also regularly published there, so that many top European leagues are almost completely equipped with player pictures.

After the game, there is no longer a newspaper, but a website that summarizes the most important details of the game day. The Match Analysis Tool (MAT), which lists some detailed statistics about the respective game, is intended to help with the subsequent analysis of a game; for example, it provides the running routes and ball contacts of every player on the field.

Soccer Manager 07

The FM 07 again includes the private area that many players missed. Your own family can now be edited at the start of the game. The luxury objects area has been opened up to players and fansites so that from this year they can add as many objects as they want to the game. Many more features have also returned to the game. So z. B. 3D games are canceled again or, as an alternative to the original 2D player pictures, 3D player faces are also displayed. In addition, many new player photos came back (including almost all players from the Austrian Bundesliga ).

A lot of statistics have been added that were already available in Football Manager 2005 . A total of 57 different statistics are available, an increase by a factor of 2.5 compared to the previous year. For the first time in football manager history, you can also control a player yourself. In addition, cooperation agreements have recently become possible. For example, you can buy players from other clubs or you can get money for sales yourself. For the first time, EA Sports was also able to acquire the licenses for the German regional leagues, the 2nd division of Switzerland ( Challenge League ) and the 1st Turkish division ( Süper Lig ). The club area mode has been fundamentally renewed and now built in the style of SimCity . There are also around 100 different buildings and dozens of options for landscaping (walls, hedges, etc.).

In the FM 07 , the integration of jerseys, coats of arms and player pictures into the game is much easier than in previous FM versions and can also be done later. Furthermore, it is now also possible to integrate manager, president and stadium images into the game.

Having learned from the earlier “bugged” soccer manager parts, the Bright Future team pretended to work harder on finding and eliminating bugs . In addition, all bugs from the previous year were collected in a thread in the forum.

Football Manager 07: Extra time

The extension add-on came out on February 22nd . It includes some new features and also new statistics. The latest feature of the extension is the opportunity to actively participate in the team's success as a player-coach. To do this, you have to create your 3D head at the beginning and distribute your strengths and talent. How many strength points you have at the beginning depends on the general strength of the team.

Another feature are the "revaluation and devaluation rounds". At the beginning of the season, during the winter break and at the end of the season, players are additionally improved or worsened. A player is upgraded if he feels comfortable with the team, has played good games recently, etc. He is downgraded if he is injured or has problems over a long period of time or frequently. In addition, new original stages were built into the game and the database was revised. The 3D gameplay has also been improved. For example, a free kick is no longer whistled for every small foul.

Some time after the release, a patch was released to extend it , which fixes a crash that occurred due to the construction of too many youth camps by the computer clubs.

Bright Future has confirmed that all of the features from Renewal will be included in FM08 .

Soccer Manager 08

The release date for the FM08 was October 30, 2007, in Austria the game was mostly sold from November 2nd. For the first time, it is also possible in the German version of the game to cover up the talent or strength of players who do not belong to your own club. The following applies: the lower the league, the less information you get about the player. This also entails a completely new scouting system. The 3D mode and the AI have been significantly revised for this part. Problems in 3D mode known from previous versions (player runs out, player hits the ball into nothing, etc.) have been fixed, but some graphical modifications have also been made. However, the engine is the same as in previous versions.

The Football Manager 08 was released mid-January 2008 in addition to smartphones.

Soccer Manager 09

The FM09 was released on October 30th, 2008. The biggest changes are the conversion of large parts of the graphics engine to that of the game FIFA 09 , a new type of text mode that is supposed to be similar to a live ticker , a more extensive staff area and an optionally lighter design. In addition, Bright Future announced that there would be no add-on like the Football Manager 07 , but that all updates would be free.

Games sold in Germany show the coach of the German national soccer team , Joachim Löw , on the cover .

Soccer Manager 10

(edition for Germany)

The FM10 was released on October 29, 2009. From this year onwards, the product for the Swiss market was no longer marketed as a football manager , but as a FIFA manager . For the first time there was an online mode in which up to eight players can compete against each other for free. In total, over 400 large and small changes were integrated. The 3D mode has been significantly revised again.

In Germany the cover showed the coach of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , Ralf Rangnick . The Swiss edition shows a manager from behind, looking at the field.

The fifth update was released on June 2, 2010. It was the update for the Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa, in which you can lead any national team through the World Cup in a new game mode.

The online mode for FM10 was discontinued on February 8, 2011.

Soccer Manager 11

(edition for Germany)

The FM11 was released on October 28, 2010. On August 12, 2010 it was announced that Felix Magath , the coach of FC Schalke 04 , will be featured on the cover for the German market . He is the first to be seen there twice on the cover.

The Swiss edition of the FIFA Manager adorned Ciriaco Sforza .

Significant innovations include a. a completely revised strength system, through which the player strength can now be determined individually for each position and also the experience of the player plays a bigger role (players with little experience get a deduction of their strength values, whereas players with great experience get a bonus). Player transfers can now be better planned in advance by praising the player through the press or holding preliminary talks with him. In addition, the tactics menu has been revised, which should simplify setting the tactics.

The introduction of so-called premium services is also new . Four additional functions could be purchased from the EA Store for around € 5 each. It was a function called Live Season , through which the database was updated weekly and you could therefore join the game at any time during the season, Team Control , which allows all players to be controlled in 3D mode (by default, only one certain players can be controlled by themselves), a premium online account that made additional functions accessible in online mode, as well as a fan pack that contains additional player pictures and graphics.

The Fußball Manager 11 was available in three versions: In addition to the standard version, there was also an anniversary edition to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the series, which also contained a book with background information on the history of the series and tips. In addition, the Premium Online Account and the Fan Pack were already included. In addition, a special edition containing all four premium services was only available by download .

In the Looki test , the Fußball Manager 11 received a rating of 85 percent. It was criticized that it offers few innovations overall and that it contains many bugs . The successor is praised for its ambition and general sophistication.

Soccer Manager 12

Logo of the Football Manager 12
(International)

The Football Manager 12 , and FIFA Manager 12 , 2011. On appeared in German-speaking countries on October 20, the German cover is Thomas Tuchel , the coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05 depicted on the Swiss Cover Murat Yakin , at this time coach of FC Luzern .

With the FM 12 , the focus was placed on offline mode and 700 new features and improvements were incorporated. The 3D game has been completely revised and the AI reprogrammed, which has a better effect on, for example, substitutions and tactics of the opposing AI managers. There is also a new club area with 25 buildings with a total of 289 expansion stages; Buildings also age and need to be renovated from time to time.

The finance area has been expanded, where a distinction is now made in sponsorship between main, premium, secondary and local sponsors, which should show the financial differences between top clubs and smaller clubs. Another big innovation is the squad analysis, which the team analyzes according to selected game systems and z. B. stimulates sales of players with no prospects or indicates a weak position in the team. Since AI managers also use this tool, they are now acting more realistically on the transfer market . The classic text mode is also available again, which shows the build-up / attack of a team step-by-step.

For the first time, the developers worked with the community to add new game content. The “Your Feature!” Campaign brought many small innovations, such as B. the speech before the game. After voting, twelve functions emerged. The online mode has not been expanded, but all premium features from last year are available to all players.

Soccer Manager 13

(edition for Germany)

On May 31, 2012, the Football Manager 13 was officially announced. It was published on October 25, 2012. The cover of both the German and the Swiss edition shows the Swiss coach Lucien Favre , who was coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach at the time . The fundamental new functions included team dynamics, a freely configurable menu bar, individual player goals, decision-making situations in text mode, new planning tools, as well as a new half-time area and improvements in the 3D game. The basic resolution of the game has been increased from 1024 × 768 to 1280 × 1024 in order to offer an even more intense gaming experience.

Also this year the promotion was your feature! where fans could contribute their own ideas. Among other things, the buyback option and direct lending came into play. The community also requested the player development tool and an overview screen for upcoming events.

The game received mixed ratings. The large size and complexity were praised, but the numerous bugs, the sometimes irrational AI, incomprehensible effects of the game mechanics and the few and insignificant new functions as well as the inadequate implementation of the same generated numerous criticism. It was also noted that the game engine is now very outdated.

Soccer Manager 14

Logo of the Football Manager 14
(International)

Football Manager 14 was released on 24 October 2013. This is a so-called Legacy Edition , in addition to some minor changes only contains an updated database and otherwise with the previous football manager 13 is identical, the scope of the license packages in relation to the Previous version was downsized. This has been referred to several times by fans and the trade press as a “rip-off” or “update at almost full price”. For the first time, there was no coach on the German cover of the game packaging, but the championship trophies of the First and Second Bundesliga.

On November 23, 2013 it was announced in an open letter from Gerald Koehler on the official website of the FM that the series will be completely discontinued and that there will be no further patches and updates for the Football Manager 14. Known bugs and crashes were not fixed. Reasons for the hiring were, among other things, that the FM had reached a point where a new engine and a corresponding online technology would have been necessary and the general trend would be towards online and mobile technologies anyway. The official website has been removed and the game has disappeared from the Origin store. Gerald Köhler later stated in an interview that the decision had already been made by EA Sports in Canada before Football Manager 13 and that Bright Future would have liked to continue in full.

Cover

While the international cover has been kept neutral since the name was changed to FIFA Manager in 2006 , the game packaging (DVD box) in Germany has been adorned every year since 2002 by a well-known manager and / or trainer who was able to celebrate particularly great successes with his club in the preseason. A similar concept has existed for the Swiss market since 2010. While the German covers and the name Fußball Manager were taken over by then, EA has since produced its own cover for German and French-speaking Switzerland under the name FIFA Manager and, from 2011, has been showing Swiss coaches.

Germany

At the beginning of the series it was Rudi Assauer , a year later Lothar Matthäus and in 2004 the then Leverkusen manager Reiner Calmund . In 2005 coach Felix Magath from Bayern Munich was on the cover and in 2006 the Werder-Bremen duo Klaus Allofs and Thomas Schaaf could be seen. In 2007 the former HSV and former BVB trainer Thomas Doll was the "cover model". For the FM 08 , Hans Meyer , former coach at 1. FC Nürnberg , was hired as a cover model. On the cover of Fußball Manager 09 , Joachim Löw, a national coach, was featured for the first time . The 2010 cover adorned Ralf Rangnick , the coach of the German Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim at the time . On the FM 11 as seen in 2005, Felix Magath, who thus the first person who was twice on the cover. Thomas Tuchel from 1. FSV Mainz 05 can be seen on the cover of FM 12 , which was released in October 2011 . On the cover of FM 13 was Lucien Favre , coach of Borussia Moenchengladbach displayed.

For the first time, no coach was shown on the Football Manager 14 , but the championship trophies of the First and Second Bundesliga.

Switzerland

For 2010 a trainer was shown from the rear. In 2011, Ciriaco Sforza was selected as the cover image for German and French Switzerland, followed by Murat Yakin in 2012, and in 2013, as in Germany, the Swiss trainer Lucien Favre graced the cover.

Publications related to the game

In April 2008 the developers started a blog to keep interested parties up to date on the developments in the FM 09 and some background information on the development team. In addition, FM Interaktiv has been on the homepage since April 2008 , a monthly internet magazine that deals with the development team, the various fan sites and the football manager . An extra Twitter account was also created. The publications are, however, irregular and temporarily inactive.

Editing scene

Over the years, a large editing scene has formed in the FM fan community with the aim of bringing more realism into the game and this, among other things. a. accomplished by creating new leagues, coats of arms, jerseys, gamer pictures as well as modifications to the gameplay. On many international fan sites you can find own products for free download. The countries already created by EA (from FM07 Bright Future) will be expanded through expansion in the league tree and with the help of an international fansite network. With the FM 2006 gamer pictures became more and more popular, because every player without a gamer picture has a monotonous gray picture in the profile due to the missing dedication of EA (changed for the FM07 ). This means that every player looks the same after about 15 years of playing. The "Player Pictures League Patch", published by the German fansite Soccer-Zone , which contains over 4,000 player pictures for the Football Manager 2007 and is unique so far, caused a sensation . For example, the fansite FM Total has meanwhile released 100 gamer picture packages for the FM11 , which mostly contain the gamer pictures of the complete squad of a certain club. So-called NADL data sets (Name-Thinking Leagues) have also increased in popularity. The fan sites FMCorner and FM-Arena have also published a large “MegaPatch” several times, which unlocks all countries included in the game and creates a league for each country with original club data and coats of arms.

Bright Future supports the editors for the FM 07 with a specially optimized editor, with which z. B. Create teams for NADL data sets with just a few mouse clicks. With the editor you can also B. Player changes can be inserted into the FM . In addition, for the first time there is an editor for “Voices for the game” for the Fußball Manager 07 .

The editor was included with the game in the FM 07 for the first time in several years; older versions could be downloaded from numerous fan sites. He has since been included in every part of the series.

After the game was discontinued, the editors of FM-Zocker decided to continue supporting the game. It was achieved to change the start date and so the game is kept up to date every day.

Manager stories

A few years ago, a separate subcommunity developed, the manager story community. The point of a manager story is to describe the experiences of FM from the perspective of a coach, rarely from that of a player. Readers give the story feedback and suggestions for improvement. So-called manager story elections have been held in the official FM board since the beginning of the year. Here the community chooses the best story of the month. The elections have since been discontinued due to disputes and continued on an independent platform.

criticism

Although most parts of the games were consistently rated very well by both the trade press and customers, there is still a high potential for criticism. The main focus is on the rigid business policy of EA Sports. For example, the internationally successful football manager in Germany was not allowed to be sold due to exclusive licenses owned by EA Sports.

The annual successors of the series usually differed only marginally from the predecessor in terms of play, but were sold at full price. At the time of publication, every game in the series had major bugs , which EA and Bright Future largely corrected through patches . For the 2007 version, 70 game testers were equipped with a test version as a preventive measure. The internal German test department was also reactivated. It was also criticized that errors in previous parts were not corrected or taken over in the latest editions and supplemented with new programming errors.

On computers that are no longer up to date, the game runs, depending on the number of leagues calculated, sometimes very slowly and takes a lot of time. Since the Football Manager 2007: Extension , Bright Future has been working, according to official information, on optimizing the calculation processes and thus sometimes significantly reducing the time required. When selecting the leagues, it is also displayed to what extent the computer is likely to be busy.

Further points of criticism related to the sometimes incomprehensible effects of the game mechanics (tactical specifications, for example, are often not implemented or only to a limited extent by the trained team, or injured players complain about insufficient operating times). Especially in the last parts of the series, the impression sometimes arose that new game functions had no real impact on the game, i.e. that they were not sufficiently programmed. Even the AI does not always act logically, so it sometimes happens that computer-controlled clubs, for example, reduce their squad so much that they are ultimately forced to use youth players in the first team.
