The fleet ASEAG ( Aachener streetcar and power supply AG ) having at December 31, 2018 233 own joint and solo buses, including to 22 December 2019 and double articulated buses of the type Van Hool AGG 300 , in addition 246 buses be rented together with drivers .

Since the 2000s, the fleet has consisted of more articulated than standard vehicles. The ratio of vehicles from MAN and Mercedes-Benz was almost the same in the 1990s, but after MAN NG 263 was procured in 2000, no buses were bought from MAN for ten years. The first MAN after the long break was KOM 296, which was bought in 2010, but was not registered until 2011 due to delays.

The first buses (1944–1960)

Although the first public service bus rolled through Aachen as early as 1914, it was not until 1944 that we could speak of a beginning bus era. Previously, the tram network was largely destroyed by bombing raids, so the bus was a good replacement. But at that time there was a lack of fuel, spare parts and tires. Then the first trolleybus line was built, which was almost 20 kilometers long, at that time it was the longest trolleybus route in Germany. After the Second World War, the development of the bus line finally picked up speed, and the trolleybus route was rebuilt. The fleet consisted of a colorful mix of makeshift buses. From the mid-1950s, these were replaced by the Büssing buses with the “chrome spider” on the front. The tram lost its importance from 1960, so in 1974 the tram and trolleybus operations were discontinued.

Period of the first standard bus generation (1968–1985)

The standardization of the buses was initiated by the Hamburger Hochbahn and carried out by the Association of Public Transport Companies (VÖV), as there was a great variety of types after the Second World War. The first standard buses came to Aachen in 1968. In the years that followed, most buses were procured by Büssing (later: MAN-Büssing and MAN). Articulated buses were bought for the first time in 1974 (twelve MAN SG 192). In 1982 it was decided to add Mercedes-Benz O 305 solo buses to the fleet for the first time. Several articulated buses of this type followed two years later.

Vehicles of the second standard bus generation (1986–1991)

In the mid-1970s, planning began for a successor to the first-generation VÖV bus. Series production of the second-generation standard regular-service buses began in 1984 at the manufacturers MAN, Daimler-Benz and Auwärter Neoplan. The ASEAG procured standard buses of the models MAN SG 242 , SL 202 , Mercedes-Benz O 405 and the articulated pusher Version O 405 G .

Midibuses (1990-2001)

From December 1, 1990, midi buses were used on bus line 4 in Aachen, which were significantly smaller than a normal bus. As a result, the Aachener Markt could be reached directly again, at the same time bus line 4 was extended beyond Kaiserplatz to the Adalbertsteinweg car park. Operations ceased in 2001.

Low-floor buses from 1991-2000

In 1991 the age of the low-floor bus began at ASEAG. Five buses from MAN ( NL 202 ) and Mercedes-Benz ( O 405 N ) were delivered this year . These buses had stepless entry, but the seats were on pedestals. In addition, the new ASEAG paint scheme was introduced with this series. The first pedestal-free low-floor buses came to ASEAG in the summer of 1992.

After the first procurement of low-floor buses, high-floor buses were delivered for the last time in 1992, one of these ten MAN SG 242 articulated buses is kept as a museum bus and is only rarely used at high school levels. The reason for the procurement was the lack of availability of low-floor articulated buses and the good experience with this type of bus.

The fleet since 2000

In 2000 it became clear that the previous series were slowly being phased out, and so a successor model had to be procured. ASEAG decided to lease two vehicles each from MAN and Neoplan to test them. The Neoplan buses left the fleet after two years, while the MAN buses remained in the fleet permanently. In 2002, the ASEAG workshop was supposed to become a Volvo contract partner so that external orders could be received. For this purpose, ASEAG should procure twelve Volvo B7Ls . These vehicles were numbered from KOM 100 for internal reasons. With this series, the new color scheme of the buses was introduced, which is due to the new image of ASEAG. In addition to the Volvo buses, 24 Citaro O530 Gs were also purchased from Evobus in 2002 as part of the modernization program.

After the Volvo solo buses, only solo and articulated buses of the Citaro type were procured until 2006. After testing a double articulated bus from Utrecht in 2003, it was decided in 2005 to purchase two of its own double articulated buses so that a long-term test could be started. Despite the positive result, only six buses were purchased in 2007 instead of the planned 14 more buses. In addition, Citaros of the facelift generation were ordered for the first time in 2007, and many more followed. Since 2009 there are also two low-entry buses in the fleet. In 2010 the testing of a Mercedes-Benz CapaCity and a MAN Lion`s City GL started (which could not be registered until January 2011). In 2011, after many years, a series of MAN buses was ordered again.

In 2012, two hybrid buses were added to the fleet, a MAN Lion`s City Solo HybridBus and a hybrid articulated bus from Evobus , which was converted into an electric bus in the ASEAG workshop. After the successful testing of the Capa City, six more buses of this type were added to the fleet, but this time in a four-door version. In 2014, Citaro articulated and solo buses ( low-entry ) of the second generation were purchased for the first time . At the turn of the year nine articulated buses of this generation were added to the fleet. From December 2014 to the end of 2015, ASEAG tested a lightweight bus from the Dutch manufacturer VDL . This bus was very convincing, so that initially five buses of this type were ordered, which will be in service from January 2016. In the next few years, however, more buses of this type are to be added to the fleet little by little. This

At the beginning of 2016 it was announced that ASEAG intends to buy 15 articulated electric buses in addition to its self-converted articulated electric bus, including a double articulated bus.

Series currently in service are highlighted in light green in the tables. The information on retirement is based on the data from euregiobus.de.

Netliner (2016)

The Netliner is an innovative on-call bus offer with a demand-oriented dynamic line system for the city of Monschau. Customers can specify their travel preferences via smartphone, PC or by telephone. There are no fixed timetables and routes. The routes of the buses are calculated according to the wishes of the passengers.

Trial operation started in March 2016. Two Mercedes-Benz Sprinters (MA-MB 202 and 203) were procured on loan for this purpose in January . After the end of the test phase, the two minibuses were taken over on June 27th and registered with the license plates AC-L 995 (61) and AC-L 996 (62).
