Fulgence Werner Le Roy

Fulgence Werner Le Roy OSB (born August 23, 1924 in Beervelde , Belgium ; † October 14, 2017 in Affligem Abbey , Belgium) was a Belgian Benedictine and Roman Catholic abbishop of the territorial abbey and the diocese of Pietersburg (today Polokwane), South Africa.

Life

Fulgence Werner Le Roy entered the novitiate of the Belgian Benedictine Abbey of Affligem on September 8, 1946 , made perpetual profession on September 22, 1947 and was ordained a priest on July 20, 1952 . From 1953 to 2007 he served as a missionary in the Northern Transvaal Mission (South Africa). On 18 December 1974 he was appointed abbot of the abbey selected from Pietersburg. He was also active as a pastor and religion teacher and almsman at Limpopo University in the Turfloop township. In 1973 he and his friar Willibrord Van Rompaey OSB set up a pastoral center for the Congregation of Subiaco .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 10, 1975 titular bishop of Ausafa and abbot ordinary of Private Pietersburg Abbey . The Archbishop of Pretoria George Francis Daniel donated him episcopal ordination on September 14 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Peter Fanyana John Butelezi OMI , Bishop of Umtata and John Thomas Durkin MSC , Auxiliary Bishop in Paris .

Pope John Paul II appointed him, after the territorial abbey was transformed into a diocese, on December 15, 1988, as the first bishop of Pietersburg. On February 17, 2000 Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation and he returned to Affligem Abbey. During his 24-year term in office, he consecrated 102 churches. In 2008 he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Belgian Order of the Leopold .
