history

Bust of the school's namesake, JB Fuqua, in the Hall of Flags

The Graduate School of Business Administration was founded in 1969. In the same year, 20 students were enrolled. In 1974, Thomas F. Keller, a 1953 Duke graduate, became the new rector of the faculty. In three years, Keller's capital campaign raised $ 24 million, of which $ 10 million came from businessman and philanthropist JB Fuqua. The name of the faculty was then changed to "The Fuqua School of Business".

JB Fuqua grew up with his grandparents on a tobacco farm in Prince Edward County , Virginia . Fuqua's longstanding relationship with Duke University began when he checked out books in the mail from the Duke Library. JB Fuqua's cumulative donations to Duke at the time of his death on April 5, 2006 were nearly $ 40 million.

In September 2008 Fuqua started an expansion initiative to set up universities in St. Petersburg , Dubai , Shanghai , New Delhi and London .

Course offer

The faculty's faculty comes from ten different disciplines: Accounting , Marketing , Decision Sciences, Business Administration and Economics , Finance, Management, Health Management , Communication Management, Operations Management and Strategy. The Daytime MBA program focuses on Marketing, Decision Sciences, Energy and Environment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Finance, Financial Analysis, Leadership and Ethics, Management, Operations Management, Nonprofit Leadership, and Strategy. The teaching staff achieved first place in the Businessweek (Intellectual Capital) ranking in 2010 and 2012.

Double degrees

The Duke MBA offers multiple degrees with the option of a double degree in conjunction with other highly regarded college and professional degrees at Duke University. In these programs, students need less time to complete two degrees than they would if they did the two degrees separately. Dual degrees are available from Duke University School of Medicine (medicine), Duke University School of Law (law), Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, Sanford School of Public Policy (political science), and Duke University School of Nursing offered.

Research institutes

Research institutes at the Fuqua School of Business promote specific academic interests of the business school. This includes:

  • The Fuqua / Coach K Center of Leadership & Ethics (COLE): COLE was founded in cooperation with Duke Athletics and the Kenan Institute for Ethics to promote leadership skills in students through research and education.
  • Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE): The center promotes innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to improving the social environment through education and research.
  • Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER): Dukes CIBER integrates international content in Fuqua lectures, organizes workshops and conferences and promotes international research. It is also the leading research center in the Offshoring Research Network, an international network that investigates the offshore sourcing of business processes and services.
  • Center of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI): Fuqua created this department to provide grants in business creation and innovation with the aim of creating ideal conditions for students interested in business start-up.
  • Center for Energy, Development and the Global Environment (EDGE): EDGE deals with education, research and public relations and focuses on two main areas: Global Energy and Corporate Sustainability. Through education, research, and commitment, EDGE creates promising paths to a sustainable energy system and economy. The institute works with leading companies to implement these innovations in their value chain and helps to create partnerships that can accelerate these transformations.
  • Center for Financial Excellence: The Center for Financial Excellence supports financial research and teaching at Duke, with a special focus on strengthening relationships between faculty, students and financial professionals.

Code of honor

Several studies show that students at business schools are more likely to rate themselves as academically dishonest than students in other disciplines. To allay these concerns, the Fuqua School of Business has an extensive code of ethics, which is also implemented with disciplinary measures.

At the end of the 2006/2007 academic year, Fuqua issued sanctions against 34 MBA students - almost 10% of the 2008 class - in the second semester for fraud in an open-book homework test. By decision of the Fuqua Judicial Board, 9 students were expelled from the university at the end of April 2007, and 15 students were given a one-year ban. Nine more had to visit the entire lecture again; a student just had to retake the exam. All disciplinary action was confirmed on appeal by the school's Appeals Committee.

Well-known lecturers

While at Duke University, Robert E. Whaley developed the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index (stock symbol: VIX) - a measure of the implied volatility of the markets. Another notable faculty member is Dan Ariely , an Israeli-American professor of psychology and behavioral economics.
