history
The company, founded in 1955, had its first headquarters in Englewood Cliffs , New Jersey.
As early as 1973, Volkswagenwerk AG was considering building a production plant in the USA in order to avoid unfavorable exchange rates and high production costs in Germany .
After Volkswagen of America's sales had more than halved from 1973 to 1976, the Supervisory Board decided in 1976 to build an assembly plant in the USA. In April 1978 production of the Golf I, known as the Rabbit, began in the newly established factory near New Stanton in Westmoreland County (Pennsylvania) . Before that, Volkswagen of America only dealt with the national sales of imports from Germany and Mexico .
At the end of 1987, Volkswagen phased out production at the New Stanton plant and relocated production to Puebla , Mexico . In 1988 the company's headquarters were relocated to Troy (Michigan) , and in 1991 to Auburn Hills (Michigan) .
In April 2008 the Volkswagen Group of America moved into its new headquarters in "Ferdinand Porsche Drive" in Herndon (Virginia).
