George Francis "Gabby" Hayes (born May 7, 1885 in Stannards , New York , † February 9, 1969 in Burbank , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Hayes played mostly the sidekick of the protagonist in numerous B - westerns of the 1930s and 1940s , including the "singing cowboy" Roy Rogers or in the early films with John Wayne . His nickname "Gabby" is derived from the character of Gabby Whittaker , whom he played in 27 Roy Rogers films. In total he and Rogers made over 40 films. In Germany he is best known for the television series Western von Yesterday , which was broadcast on ZDF from 1978 to 1986.

In total, Hayes has appeared in almost 200 films. His grave is in the Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles .
