Gabriel Monod of Froideville

Gabriel Monod von Froideville (born March 11, 1711 ; † September 3, 1758 in Frankfurt an der Oder ) was a royal Prussian major general and commander of the 6th Dragoon Regiment , as well as a knight of the order Pour le Mérite and heir of Urschlau, Caunitz, Briese, Bartsch and Kullmer in Silesia.

His parents came from the Swiss canton of Bern. His father was Gabriel Monod von Froideville (1669–1753) the lord of Ballens and Yens . His mother was Susanne von Crousaz daughter of the mayor of Lausanne David von Crousaz. His brother Franz Isaak von Froideville was also a Prussian major general and other brothers were Prussian soldiers.

Life

He first studied in Lausanne and served 1727–1729 as a volunteer in the Constans Regiment Swiss on foot in the Netherlands . In 1730 he joined the Saxon army as a volunteer in Dresden and was released there on August 17, 1731. Then he advanced to the Saxon cavalry on September 19, 1731 as a cornet in the Cuirassier Regiment Nassau and on November 14, 1731 as a second lieutenant. With the regiment he took part in the Rhine campaign of 1734 and was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on April 15, 1735. On January 20, 1741 he received his requested farewell and followed his superior Colonel Ernst Christoph von Nassau into Prussian service. There he became a captain in the 11th Dragoon Regiment , again under Nassau.

During the First Silesian War he besieged the Neisse fortress as a captain . With the support of his brothers Samuel-Ludwig and Isaak, he successfully fought with his small unit at Nappa-Gödel in Moravia (near the town of Napajedla ) against an overpowering, enemy hussar regiment. For this he received the order Pour le Mérite . On March 14, 1744 he was promoted to major.

Before the Second Silesian War he explored the area from Dresden up the Elbe to Prague for the king. The king was very satisfied with the written report. On June 4, 1745 he fought in the Battle of Hohenfriedberg and the Siege of Cosel. On October 11, 1750 he was transferred to the 6th Dragoon Regiment , where he became a lieutenant colonel on June 26, 1751 and a colonel on June 12, 1755.

In the Seven Years' War on August 30, 1757 Froideville fought in the battle of Groß-Jägersdorf . From the winter camp in Mecklenburg the regiment moved to fight the Swedes in what was then Swedish Pomerania . In the winter of 1757/1758 he commanded the cavalry in Mecklenburg . He received much praise for the discipline of his troops. In June 1758, he was elevated to major general and given command in Dragoons. 6. In the battle of anger village on August 25, 1758 he was transferred to shot in the head and seriously injured Frankfurt an der Oder brought, where he arrived three September died. He was buried in the Reformed Church there.

Gabriel Monod von Froideville married Christiane Eusebia von Kalckreuth , a daughter of the Electoral Saxon major Hans Ernst von Kalckreuth, heir of Ober- and Nieder-Siegersdorf, and his wife Sophie Elisabeth von Bülow. The widow later marries her cousin, the privy councilor von Bülow. Field Marshal Friedrich Adolf von Kalckreuth was a brother of Christiane Eusebia von Kalckreuth.
