Gabriel Voicu (born September 21, 1968 in Bucharest ) is a German-Romanian violinist and conductor.

Life

Gabriel Voicu, who came from a family of musicians, took his first steps in musical life at the age of five at the George Enescu Music Lyceum in Bucharest, where he made his debut six months later.

After the emigration of the family in 1981 Gabriel Voicu young student was in the violin class of Wolfgang Marschner at the University of Music in Freiburg and from 1987 he continued his education at Edith Peinemann at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt continued . Also in 1987 Voicu began his conducting training with Jiří Stárek in Frankfurt and took part in Sergiu Celibidache's open master classes in Mainz .

From 1991 Gabriel Voicu was a scholarship holder of various festivals in the USA and Europe up to the Juilliard School in New York . Gabriel Voicu made his US debut under the conductor Janosh Silverstein and in 1994 he played 96 recitals in Japan. After his return, Gabriel Voicu concentrated on his string quartet and chamber music in the master class of the Melos Quartet in Stuttgart . Gabriel Voicu took part in master classes with Yehudi Menuhin , Sergiu Celibidache, Wolfgang Marschner and others and worked with various musicians as a soloist, chamber music partner, concertmaster and conductor.

Gabriel Voicu is the founder and conductor of the chamber orchestra " Camerata Strad ", which he directed from 1996 to 2000 and with which he gave concerts in the great hall of the Berlin Philharmonic with the violinist Igor Oistrach . Gabriel Voicu initiated the "Schloss Ellwangen Music Festival" in 1996 and was briefly deputy orchestra director of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra .

In 2013 Gabriel Voicu had the opportunity to sit in and assist with Zubin Mehta as a conductor as part of his collaboration with the Munich Philharmonic , the Bavarian State Opera and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra . In 2014 Gabriel Voicu was allowed to assist Zubin Mehta in Berlin for the second time and to sit in on the work with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Berlin State Opera.

Since 2019 Gabriel Voicu has been playing the "Ex-Hamma" JBVuillaume violin from 1828, No. 126, which is in his possession.
