The dizygoti Schmidt-Heins studied from 1968 to 1974 at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Since 1974 they have been working freelance (individually and as an artist duo).
Barbara Schmidt-Heins lives and works in Pinneberg near Hamburg. Gabriele Schmidt-Heins lives and works in Halstenbek near Hamburg.
The viewing of the artistic life's work of mother and grandfather gave the impetus for the exhibition Heins - Schmidt Heins, Three Generations Photography , which was shown in 2004 at the Museum of Art and Commerce in Hamburg, where the sisters each exhibited different artistic projects.
The concept artists work on photographic and text readymades around the topic of time . Words, sentence fragments from newspapers and magazines are brought into a new artistic context together with images. The twins' objects and installations are always about meanings that are ambiguous.
