The Gain is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon municipalities of Clenze and Bergen an der Dumme in the combined municipality of Lüchow (Wendland) in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 254 is 215  hectares . It is completely part of the FFH area "Landgraben- und Dummeniederung" and the EU bird sanctuary of the same name . In the south it borders on the nature reserve " Obere Dummeniederung ". The area has been under nature protection since August 2, 2003. In this area it replaces the protected landscape area "Gain - Mühlenbach - upper Dummeniederung" with the DAN 28 label , which was designated by ordinance of August 1, 1974. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Lüchow-Dannenberg district.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Clenze and northeast of Bergen an der Damme on the state border with Saxony-Anhalt within the Elbhöhen-Wendland nature park . The larger part of the nature reserve consists of a near-natural forest area that grows on glacial till. The forest area is characterized by wet and humid locations and is traversed or limited by several watercourses. The Black Brook runs through the nature reserve. The Clenzer Bach limits the nature reserve in parts to the north, to the east it is bounded by the Dumme and the provincial boundary ditch and in the south, too, watercourses, including the Schnegaer Mühlengraben, form part of the boundary of the nature reserve. In the west it borders on Kreisstraße 6 between Jiggel and Gistenbeck.

Alder and birch forests, alder and ash forests and mixed oak forests dominate the rivers . In poorer locations, beech and mixed beech forests and light oak forests as well as hardwood-rich pine stands grow .

In the area of the Silly Lowlands in the south of the nature reserve, small-structured agricultural areas with fields and grassland are predominant. South of it the natural reserve by wet is Hochstaudenfluren , Sedge , reed beds and marsh bushes and forests dominated swampy and marshy sites.

A circular route with information boards runs through part of the nature reserve and leads from Bergen an der Dumme to the nature reserves “Obere Dummeniederung” and “Gain”.
