The oak and beech forests are a nature reserve in the community-free area of Göhrde and the community of Göhrde in the joint community of Elbtalaue in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district .

General

The nature reserve is around 815  hectares . It comprises the approximately 805 hectare FFH area "Beech and oak forests in the Göhrde (with Breeser Grund)". The existing nature reserves " forests at the hunting lodge Göhrde ", " Kellerberg " and " Breeser reason " were in the nature reserve to "oak and beech forests in the Göhrde," as much a part of the landscape conservation area "Elbhöhen-Drawehn" that otherwise surrounds the protected area mostly. The area has been under nature protection since February 21, 2019. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Lüchow-Dannenberg district.

The nature reserve, which consists of four sub-areas, is located in the Göhrde in the Elbhöhen-Wendland nature park . It places forests within the historically old forest area under protection:

  • Kellerberg (81 hectares) in the northwest of the area ( )
  • Röthen Mitte (251 hectares) in the center of the area ( )
  • Forests at the hunting lodge Göhrde (267 hectares), supplemented by part of the valley of the Kateminer Mühlenbach in the northeast of the area ( ) and
  • Breeser Grund (216 hectares) in the south of the area ( ).

description

The forests are predominantly on dry, sandy locations in the eastern Hanoverian terminal moraine that formed in the Saale Glaciation . The forests are pronounced as grove beech forests or wiry beech forests and as oak forests on sandy soils. Some of them emerged from forests used as forest pastures . The forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood . The dominant tree species are common beech , common oak and sessile oak . Sand birch and Scots pine join them . Parts of the forests are left to their natural development, including in the two hectare “Göhrder Eichen” natural forest reserve in the “Breeser Grund” sub-area and in the 41-hectare “Ewige Route” natural forest reserve in the “Forests at the Göhrde hunting lodge”. Outside these reserves, the forests are managed by the Lower Saxony State Forests in accordance with the LÖWE principles (long-term ecological forest development). Not location-typical tree stands as pure spruce stocks and admixtures of Douglas fir and red oak to be developed in near-natural mixed deciduous forest holdings.

Breeser reason

In the sub-areas “Kellerberg” and “Breeser Grund”, contiguous heather areas with open sand areas are formed. Here dominates the heather . The heathland is partly free of wood, partly interspersed with bushes and groups of trees - especially old hat oak, of which around 400 are still present. They often change into light oak forests, sometimes with heather in the undergrowth. In the “Kellerberg” area, some very old trees are growing, at the time the nature reserve was designated, sessile oaks were around 400 years old, beeches over 280 years old and, over 170 years old, very old bog birches .

The valley of the Kate Miner mill Bach is partially of extensively as hay meadows occupied grassland with meadowfoam , meadow foxtail , Ranunculus acris , Creeping Buttercup , Wiesbaden sorrel , red fescue , honey grass, Ajuga reptans , Anthoxanthum odoratum , Lathyrus pratensis , Veronica Chamaedrys , ordinary chickweed , daisy , plantain , clover and soft brim embossed. The valley area is very humid, so that wet meadows rich in sedge and rushes are formed in places .

The stream that rises near the Göhrde hunting lodge has been straightened in the nature reserve. It is accompanied by wood and flows through the Prizessinnenteich surrounded by wood as a near-natural still water . Another still water is the Großer Suhl in the sub-area "Röthen Mitte". The waters are habitats for various plant and animal species, including amphibians and numerous dragonflies such as z. B. the Bat-Azurjungfer , which occurs at the Great Suhl.

The forests are the habitat of species of bat brown long-eared , greater mouse-eared , Barbastelle , Brandt's bat and lesser noctule and various bird species, including black and middle spotted woodpecker , stock dove and wood warblers , and some rare bugs like a hermit , stag beetle , Big Gold Bug , Red-necked flower rolling beetles and more old and deadwood beetle species. Furthermore, Wolf , otter and beaver home here. A special feature is a population of swifts that breed in trees here.

The heathland is home to various warmth-loving species such as the blue-winged wasteland insect , sand lizard and smooth snake . They are also the habitat of various moths , including the heather colored owl . Among other things, the heather areas are temporarily grazed and peeled regularly for maintenance .

In Göhrde there is the Naturum Göhrde with the forest museum opened in 1985 and an area used for forest educational purposes with an approximately five kilometer long nature trail and a forest labyrinth.
