geography
The Galgenberg is located about 1.3 km southeast of the Schorndorf market square about 100 m above the Remspegel . The keuper - witnesses mountain whose tip is made of harder siliceous sand stone consists is a nearly 20 m deep saddle with one to Fraunberg withdrawing Sporn the Schurwaldstrasse plateau connected. In terms of natural space, it belongs to the Schurwald and Welzheimer Wald natural areas .
State road 1147, which connects Schorndorf with Adelberg , Wangen and Göppingen , runs through the north and east slopes of the Galgenberg . From this street branches off a residential street ( Frauenbergweg ), which runs west or south of the elevation and south-east again in the above-mentioned. Sattel meets the same state road.
history
In 1465 a chapel - vnder dem galgen kappellin - is mentioned for the first time, which perished after the introduction of the Reformation . A chapel in front of the Oberthor consecrated to Our Lady is probably identical to the Galgenberg chapel and would explain the alternative name of the mountain ( Frauenberg , also a field name on the northern slope). Today Frauenberg is the name of a significantly higher elevation, which is a good one kilometer southeast of the Galgenberg.
Landscape protection area
With the ordinance of November 4, 1968, the summit of the Galgenberg was designated as a landscape protection area (No. 1.19.017) on an area of 9.7 ha under the name Galgenberg - Frauenberg . A FFH area (No. 7222341 - Schurwald ) is immediately adjacent to the south , so that a larger area is protected. A smaller part of the summit is also recorded as a natural monument summit of the Frauenberg (Galgenberg) (No. 81190670055).
