Old Men in New Cars - In China They Eat Dogs 2 (original title: Gamle mænd i nye biler ) is a black action - comedy from 2002, the Danish director Lasse Spang Olsen and a prequel to the film In China They Eat Dogs .

action

The film begins with the release of the small crook Harald from prison. It soon turns out that he is heavily indebted to the local Balkan mafia, but he manages to negotiate another payment deferral because he employs Vuk, a cousin of the leader, in his restaurant. When Harald arrives at his restaurant shortly afterwards, he learns that his foster father Monk is dying in the hospital; only a liver transplant could save his life. Monk's last wish is to be able to see his illegitimate son Ludvig, who, however, is in a Swedish maximum security prison for reasons not yet specified .

Harald is now faced with the problem of paying off his debts as well as freeing Monk's son and raising money for a transplant. Together with his two cooks Martin and Peter, Harald flies to Sweden to first look after Ludvig's liberation. The plan drawn up by them stipulates that Harald pretends to be a visitor, while Martin and Peter shoot a bungy rope with a crossbow into the prison courtyard from a nearby bridge , with which Harald and Ludvig are supposed to catapult themselves into freedom. After the successful implementation of the plan, the four set off for Denmark. By chance, Harald, Martin and Peter learn that Ludvig was in prison for the murder of five women. Harald is rather ignorant of this news, while Martin and Peter begin to be seriously worried.

Back in Denmark, Harald and Ludvig raid a bank in order to get the missing money. They meet Mille, who they briefly take hostage as they flee from the bank. A little later, Harald and Ludvig meet Mille again in the hospital when they visit Monk, and they abduct her without further ado. The money from the robbery is not enough, however, which is why the idea comes up to increase the money through a football bet. Peter got a tip from his old school friend Dan Hansen, who is a footballer at one of the clubs involved. However, the game does not end as intended, as Dan Hansen of all people converts a penalty and they lose all of their money. Thereupon they lie in wait for Dan Hansen in the parking garage, drive him to the car and take him with them to get the lost money from him. The footballer dies of an electric shock in an accident in which the clumsy Vuk is involved.

When the Mafia leader Harald proposes a deal, he sees another chance to raise the money for the transplant. The four are supposed to ambush a money transporter at the airport, in return they get part of the booty. The stolen money is thrown over the sea in a plane, with one of two money containers sinking into the sea. Harald, who urgently needs the money for Monk's operation, betrays the Mafiosi and uses the rest of the money to flee to a small plane with which Monk is to be brought to South America.

The mafiosi have already caught up with Harald and his friends, and there is a shootout in the course of which Monk is killed. After Monk, Harald's only reason to steal the money, is now dead, Harald gives up without claiming any of the loot.

The film ends with Monk's funeral, at which Ludvig gives Harald the Mercedes old-timer that Monk had previously received and which Harald has always wanted. When Harald drives away with him, he bursts into tears.

background

At the beginning of his career, director Olsen was mainly active as an actor and stuntman. Later he also worked as a film editor, special effects technician and cameraman. He took over the management of the stunt and special effects crew in this film and also performed stunts himself.

The film begins with a dedication to Henning Bahs, who died in the same year . Bahs was a screenwriter, production designer, special effects expert and one of the spiritual fathers of the Olsen gang . As in almost all Olsen Gang films, the main character is released from Vridsløselille State Prison at the beginning of the film plot .

Reviews

  • The magazine Cinema judges in its online portal: “Crazy. This is the best word to describe the work. Especially the characters are so comic-like and uncompromisingly anarchic that you want to scream with pleasure. "
  • Jörg Gerle from Filmdienst feels reminded of Quentin Tarantino in Olsen's film, "with the difference, however, that Olsen does not value excessive coolness." The script, "loosely woven around spectacular action sequences", is "only so outrageous as you want to follow the goings-on", but "confused enough to be easily distracted by breakneck stunts". You have to want to get involved in the drastic fun, he relies on the "uninhibited, foolish and chaos-willing audience". The convincing actors prevent the film from being silted up in "angry platitude".
  • Hélène Wanyou states in Die Tageszeitung : “The film takes a bit of time to portray the degenerate Lebovskian-Dobermanic atmosphere of its predecessor, but it starts after a few minutes. [...] Of course, this has nothing to do with reality - but it shows that not only dogma films are made in Denmark . "
  • Günter H. Jekubzik from the portal filmzentrale.de comes to a negative judgment: “The story-wise completely harmless affair about gangsters, cooks, psychopaths, debts and a terminally ill foster father is pointless and brutally brutal. The main roles are played by stupid criminals, low-flying cars and collisions in air traffic. The action maker Lasse Spang Olsen plays with a huge transport plane like in a flight simulator. Other childish things are rarely funny but often poorly staged. A human life doesn't count for much. For a bad joke, it's easy hopps. The film was supposed to be called lame jokes in broken cars and wanted to imitate Guy Ritchie [...]. The successor to In China they eat dogs [...] will probably find only a few passengers. "
