Gammel Pøl Fyr or lighthouse Alt-Pöhl ( Danish Gammel Pøl Fyr ) is a rather small lighthouse on the Danish Baltic Sea island Als in Syddanmark .

location

The lighthouse is located in the south-east of the island of Als on its peninsula Gammel Pøl (Danish for: " Old Pfuhl ") and belongs to the municipality of Sønderborg . The entrance to the Flensburg Fjord is located directly to the southwest .

history

The tower was built in 1905 (as indicated by the year on the weather vane ) and commissioned in 1906. When the lighthouse was built, the island of Als belonged to the German Empire (after the German-Danish War in 1864) . At the beginning of the 20th century, the naval stations in Flensburg-Mürwik and Sonderborg were built. At the same time several lighthouses were built along the Flensburg Fjord , which is why it is assumed that the military development may have played a role in the construction of the lighthouses.

Due to the referendum carried out in Schleswig in 1920 according to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty , the island of Als was annexed to Denmark as part of Northern Schleswig , so that the lighthouse was also handed over to the Danish administration. During the Second World War , in 1943, the German commander for the southern Jutland section suggested that German soldiers should be stationed at the lighthouse. Observations by a Danish resistance group on February 23, 1944 indicate that this plan was implemented.

description

Due to its history, the 11 meter high and round tower is therefore comparable in its construction and appearance with other lighthouses in Germany, in particular with the significantly lower Norddorf lighthouse near the municipality of Norddorf on the North Sea island of Amrum in the district of North Friesland / Schleswig-Holstein , which is today has the function of a cross- brand fire . The lighthouse was built on a brick foundation made of prefabricated cast iron segments and has several windows in the tower shaft. Below the lantern there is a circumferential viewing platform / gallery secured by a railing . The top of the tower consists of an octagonal roof covered with sheet copper and now colored green due to the formation of patina, with a weather vane at the top.

Current state

The tower is painted white with a surrounding red band on the upper half of the tower shaft. He is at position 54 ° 52 '52.8 "  N , 10 ° 4' 10.2"  O , has the identification Oc (3) WRG15s and is still the navigation for shipping in the Little Belt , especially the entrance in the Flensburg Fjord .
